My hold on this one just came in too! I am having one of those times where like 5 books have come in at the same time even though the estimate was weeks apart. Ah well - there are worse thing in life than too many books to read!

I bought it from Audible the other day. I'll start it when I finish my current audiobook. That should be pretty close to the 1st.

I'm going to use my Scribd audio for this one, it will be available to me on the 2nd.. so timing seems good for all of us :) I'm really looking forward to it! I sure do love the book covers in this series, I'm always staring at them!

I'll be starting the book sometime today. Looks like I need to go out and shovel the driveway and sidewalk. It snowed overnight. I need to buy some wireless ear buds or headphones. I have ear buds, but it's awkward shovelling with the cords hanging down and getting in the way.

My wireless headphones have changed my life, lol! I have like 3 pairs on me at all times in case one runs out of batteries. My whole family knows not to start talking to me ever unless they get my attention and make me pause my book first.

Yes, Janice, get some!!!! I'm with Katrisa - totally changed my life too! I got some for Christmas and it's wonderful! I can listen while I move around the house doing chores, and then get in the car and start driving(switching to car stereo)...

I just downloaded the audio on Scribd, I can start tomorrow... - I have 2.5 hours left of 'Dear Edward' to finish first.

I finished to the end of Chapter 22. (view spoiler)[ I've forgotten characters and magic types from the first book, so it's a bit of a workout to try to remember. It appears that by bringing magic back, people who never had magic do now like Amari and her mother. It seems like the type of magic her mother has corrupted her. I don't really remember her character from the first book.

I wonder if Prince Inan, now king, will be a positive force. Zelie swears to kill him, but maybe there's some hope there. (hide spoiler)]

At first I thought, wow, how'd you get to chapter 22 so fast, but now that I'm in it, I realize the chapters are really short, and it goes all the way to Chapter 92! HA! (at least that's how the audiobook breaks it out)

I'm at Chapter 21 (view spoiler)[So far there's a lot of conversation between the characters, and setting the stage I guess... I'm waiting for the plot to pick up and get more exciting! It's interesting to see how much fear and distrust of magic there is... you could sub in 'religion, race' for 'magic' and it feels very current today where there is such polarization and fear/unwillingness to understand the other side. I really like the family dynamics - the tension with Amari with her brother and mother. And then the strong bonding of brother/sister duo Zélie/Tzain is reassuring and makes me smile. I think (view spoiler)[ that was the intent of the author, judging from comments I read about the first book - the fight against tyranny and suppression of people because of things like ethnicity and religion. One could include divisive politics as well. I think the mother is a good example of that. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 23 - 41. (view spoiler)[ I want to think that Amari is right about her brother. Unfortunately, he seems quite biddable and swayed by his mother. Maybe he just needs to settle in to his role as king and fill those boots.

If he is the ruler to bring peace to the people, I can see a relationship between him and Zelie. It would have a strong political connection as well as a love connection. But there seems to be an attraction between Zelie and Rowan. Will the author dive into a love triangle? I hope not.

I like that they went back to the temple. Their powers seem to be heightened. There's an interesting connection of powers between Zelie and Amari. It will be interesting to see how that develops. (hide spoiler)]

Ch. 21 - Ch. 43

I'm enjoying this section. (view spoiler)[Good vivid descriptions of the magical elements coming into play again, which I find exciting. I think there's something deeper to the connection between the trio (Zelie/Amari/Inan) that will keep playing out. I can definitely see a possible future love connection between Zelie/Inan. I think it will take a while to play out, but in the end I think the forces aligning them will be stronger than their anger from the past! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 42 - 59

(view spoiler)[ I'm not so sure about Inan. He inadvertently brought his mother and army to the sanctuary. He seems to now think that the only way to end this war is to wipe out the magi.

He doesn't seem to recognize that in order for his mother to use her power, she must drain the essence from her own people, killing them. She kills more of their people than the magi. (hide spoiler)]

ch 43 - end

The pace picked up a lot, so I was quick to get through the back half. (view spoiler)[Inan starts to become more calm and decisive that the monarchy must be demolished for there to be a future for Oreisha, and he goes against his mother! But Zelie doesn't know this, and she becomes more emotional/angry that Inan must be killed as the way to win. I didn't want her to kill him, I was like nooooo, but then the surprise ending, and we're not sure! Did Inan die? Who took Zelie? Where are they? OK, so when's the next book coming out? I am at ch 21. I agree with you both that (view spoiler)[the author is consciously using the fantasy format as a way to explore how society treats groups they view as "other". So far I've felt so bad for our main group of characters. The exchange between Zelie and Amari where they are "comparing scars" was particularly powerful. (hide spoiler)]

I mean, I know she has been through a lot, but it seems like both Inan and Amari are trying to build something better for Orisha in their own way (though I do agree with you about how Inan seems overly biddable as far as his mother goes) and Zelie is hell-bent on revenge. I am hoping to finish tomorrow! I have parent teacher conferences from 4-7 tomorrow, but I don't have any parents signed up, so I'll probably have a fair amount of down time - though parents do inevitably show up even though they didn't sign up

Finished today. (view spoiler)[ I got emotional listening on my way home from work when Zelie does the ritual that sacrifices Mama Agba! Also when she reads the letters in her rebuilt home from Inan. I was proud of Inan for standing up to his mother. Out of all the main characters, I have enjoyed watching his evolution the most. I was surprised at Amari for her attack. (hide spoiler)] Now we'll have to wait who knows how long to find out what happens!
