Anyone else Love the setting, but not the story

I loved the setting of this series. I thought so many little things were so cool like the builder spirit being an AI, and the view ring using satellites and even the way magic got implemented into the world and Jorg's response of "Who the hell brought up cats?".
However for the life of me I couldn't get into the story itself. For some reason I felt too distant from the plot, Jorg was a cool character but I couldn't quite get myself to care about him as an individual - only if he succeeds in his goal of becoming the emperor. His father and miana were much more fascinating to me. And there seemed too much introspection from the point of view of Jorg and not enough time spent on what was going on.
I wanted to love it so much, considering how awesome I felt the setting was, but I just couldn't.
