It was pretty clean. The world building is difficult to follow. There is some heavy material such as prostitution, rape reference, slavery, and wars/fighting. I would want my child to be at least a mature 15 before reading it.
I wouldn't recommend it for middle grades because I don't think they would be able to understand or fully appreciate it, the race/class/gender issues. A very worldly, mature seventh grader, I think, might enjoy it.
That being said, if a younger student picked it up on his own and started reading it, I wouldn't discourage him. The good guys are good guys, and the bad guys are bad guys, so it's not likely to impede a confused kid's moral development. If it's too mature for a him or her, he or she will probably set it down after the first few chapters when they start talking about politics.
It's not a good choice for a classroom bookshelf if you have limited shelfspace (and who doesn't). But if someone gave it to my kid as a gift, I wouldn't worry about it.

It's also pretty violent from time to time and has some frightening imagery. I listened to it on audiobook at work during the day and certain things really freaked me out. And I'm, like, 25. I think there are better fantasy books for that particular age group, especially if you intend to have them read the sequels as well.
This is probably a little mature for a middle school kid. I would suggest Brandon Sanderson's Alcatraz series for a young middle school age. I enjoyed it myself and I'm almost 30!
It all depends on your child. There are references to street life dangers (ie: the threat of rape), but there aren't any actual rape or even sex scenes in the book. There is a good deal of violence, but if you have cable (or the internet) then chances are they have seen (much!) worse. Again, it is totally up to the parent's discretion, as they know their child best, but I wouldn't have a problem with my middle school son reading it.
Idk, these books are rather violent and have some other mature themes, although there's no sex as far as I remember. The first one maybe isn't *so* bad, but if they want to move onto the other two, it only gets more intense.
If it were my kid though, I wouldn't even be worried about the violence. I'd be worried because these books, especially book 3, are super depressing. I'm a 24 year old man who has read a ton of books, and none of them have really given me the sense of hopelessness that these books did. I could see these really messing with me as a kid.

I would only recommend this book for middle-schoolers. Older readers will be bored.
The first book is good, but the second one has some stuff in it that I was uncomfortable with.
I read this in elementary school, but some middle schoolers not be as mature.
Not bad at all, they probably see worse if they watch TV or play video games. The first book for sure isn't too bad, things get worse later in the seiries. Middle school is the age range it wass written for (I think).
Remember it always depends on the person so use your own personal judgment regarding the situation.
