Please discuss Drawing of the Three here. Mark all spoilers for those reading along. Please also double mark future book spoilers from the Dark Tower series just in case someone is reading along who hasn't read the series yet.

James | 1 comments Just passed through it again on my quest for the tower two weeks past (into Song of Susannah now). One interesting topic could be the consistency of the “man in black” character as portrayed in Dot3 vs the “new” version of The Gunslinger (as SK updated that character, but did not change further along the path of the beam).

BenTheile | 1 comments Read it a year ago and currently on Wizard and Glass. Drawing of the three is my favorite so far! The chapters that Eddie is introduced are my absolute favorite. Anyone else at the same point in The Dark Tower as me? What’s been your favorite chapter/chapters so far?

W & G is my favorite King book.

Amy Mc | 1 comments I have read this series, but I can’t wait to read some of the dark tower again. Drawing of the three, here I come.

Nadine | 2 comments I've read the series and Drawing of the Three is my favorite followed by Wolves.

Mark (marke_) | 103 comments I traveled to the Dark Tower for the first time last year and consider Drawing of the Three one of the best of the series. I consider this one and Wastelands the peak of the series.

I absolutely loved this book and I hope first-time readers joining the group read this month enjoy it as well. It is a lot more consumable compared to The Gunslinger, so if that one turned you off I hope you consider trying Drawing of the Three, it should bring you right back in.

After finishing IT I'm going to take some time to read some shorter books, and use this month to catch up on past King books I missed in previous group reads. I fell off track while I focused on journeying to the Dark Tower last year.

Long days and pleasant nights!

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I'm in on this one. Think I'll go with the audiobook since I've already read it.

Scott | 169 comments Hi,

I started reading the Dark Tower series with our King re-read this last year as well as trying to keep up with the separate Dark tower group re-read. Although I couldn't keep with them, I am currently up to The Wolves of Calla and hoping to finish sometime later this year. Here is my review of The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three if anyone is interested in reading it:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I must admit it has taken me longer to get into this series than most people. It wasn't until the third and fourth books that I really started to become fully connected with what Uncle Stevie had created.

To great reading everyone!

Scott,

Another great review Scott, Thanks. Pretty complete synopsis of the story there, but having read the book a couple of times already, I don't mind, and I really agree with your assessment.

Scott | 169 comments Thank you. I always appreciate your comments and feedback. Have a great week of reading.

First I have to survive the Super Bowl and I don't mean the watching... I mean the EATING. On the other hand, I'll probably be up till 2 AM so the book may be a nice distraction to the upset stomach I'm sure I'll have.

Scott | 169 comments I agree with the eating. Thank God I live on the West Coast where sporting events end before bedtime. Best wishes.

Elizabeth | 1 comments I never read this series, so took this opportunity. I just finished the first two books (I listened to the audio versions). It was hard for me to get into gunslinger, but really enjoyed the drawing of the three.

Perhaps it was because I missed something in the first book (there were times I wasn’t fully following during gunslinger, and may have unwittingly breezed past an important part), but I’m having a hard time really understanding the reason why Roland is taking this journey to the tower in the first place. I understand it’s his destiny, and the dark tower is a nexus of the worlds of sort, but that’s really it. I’m assuming future books will expand on the tower itself a bit more.

All in all, the drawing of the three often had me on edge where I had to just force myself to stop listening and just go to bed! I am interested to see how the characters develop more in the next books, especially Odetta/Detta, as there are quite a bit of hanging questions there for me.

Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Charles | 96 comments Hello Elizabeth. So you didn't really miss anything per se, in The Gunslinger. It was originally meant to be a "one off" story about one man's journey, and the sacrifices that he is willing to make in order to achieve his goal. There are actually two versions of The Gunslinger, the original, and the revised edition, which S.K. wrote to clear up some plot holes and smooth out some of the writing. In my opinion, The Gunslinger is the closest S.K. has come to writing "Literature" and it reminds me a lot of Cormac McCarthy's earlier novels, "Child of God" and "Outer Dark"(both exceptional books). Which makes sense considering that King has said before that he likes McCarthy's writing style.

As far as Roland's motive, well there is the part I can't tell you yet, and the other part. Roland has been trained from childhood to protect the beam, gunslingers are a kind of Jedi, for a lack of a better term. He knows no other life than this. Then of course there is the other matter which you will discover as you continue your own journey to The Dark Tower.

Happy Reading!

The Loco Librarian (helloconstantreader) | 7 comments I have tried reading this series honestly. I tried so hard. I made it to the Wizard and Glass, and just couldn't will myself through it. It is so miserably long and I just couldn't get into it. The entire series is not my favorite by any means. I find myself in the minority with this opinion. Does anyone else feel this way?

Mark (marke_) | 103 comments W&G is tough to get through. I had that same issue. But plow through and the series picks back up again in the back half.

Charles | 96 comments It's always interesting to see other people opinions of books. For me, The Drawing of The Three and Wizard and Glass are the best in the series. The Character development is so top notch and it really humanizes Roland. The weakest, in my opinion, is Song of Susannah. Mainly due to feeling like it could have just been included in Wolves of Calls instead of being an entire novel.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I'm really caught up in Drawing now. The story of Eddie's inclusion in the three, really kept me up all evening. I'm looking forward to the rest of it. As for W & G, I've said before that it's my favorite King book. But it's also the worst. (The Glass story kept me absolutely riveted. Wizard had the outcome of Glass, but the rest of it was almost unnecessary and really boring.

Summer (paradisecity) | 360 comments When y'all are reading about Eddie, who do you picture in your head?

Derrick | 973 comments Edward Norton is a phenomenal actor! Primal Fear, American History X, The Score, even Fight Club are some of my favorite films.

Blake Heim | 3 comments Have Read it twice. Have a hard time getting through it. I know it is very important for the series, but...I much prefer #3 on.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I read this years ago and the only thing I remembered from it was the phrase Lawyerly Lobstrosities. But this time through I'm really enjoying the book and really impressed. I love getting to know the backstory of these characters again. They really set up everything that happens hereafter.

Kandice | 4387 comments I see Justin Kirk or Eric Balfour depending on when I am reading.

Michael (thwompthing) | 17 comments My favorites - Wastelands, Wizard and Glass, Drawing of the Three, WTtK. Epic storytelling in these. The three doors in book 2 took me on an awesome adventure each time.

Gary Martin (gmmartinbooks) | 93 comments The drawing of the three is my first Dark Tower book. I just started it. I'm only on page 20. I've read a lot of his other books though. Judging from the plot I wasn't I'd like the series. I guess I'll find out.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Just finished THE DRAWING OF THE THREE and loved it even more than I did the first time. I'm tempted to jump right ahead to THE WASTELANDS. I remember liking that one even more than I did Drawing. I'll have a review up as soon as I can figure out what to say... definitely five stars.

I remember well that feeling of wanting to dive right into the next installment, and I think I did when I read this one. The cliffhanger in Wastelands was more nail-biting though!

Jessalyn Joy | 8 comments I just started it like a day ago and I am loving it. I'm currently at the part where he has brought the Lady of the Shadows into his world. I love the characters and the story line. Stephen King, in my opinion, does such a good job with the story line and characters. I think that the characters are well introduced and described. I also think that he did well in keeping the story line of The Gunslinger continued on into The Drawing of the Three.
