Sheila Jean | 330 comments So. Since it's today's daily deal I decided to check out the audio sample, in case I decide to buy it -- I've already read it in print from the library. The sample is from the second half of the book. Is that typical?

I'm not sure how common that is. I almost NEVER listen to the samples. Which now that I think about it is a bit strange. I don't think I listened to this one either. Maybe though.

I was just struggling to read this one with my eyes and with it being on sale I just went for it.

I'm really loving the audio though. This is the first time I've listened to this narrator. Someone said she did The Rook too, but I'd already owned that in ebook so I didn't listen to that one.

Sheila Jean | 330 comments I'd never sampled the audio in Audible before, but since I already read the book so I wanted to see if I'd be interested in a reread in Audio at some point.

I don't remember if she did The Rook, but I know I listened to Moira Quirk most recently with Gail Carriger's Finishing School and Custard Protocol series.

Elizabeth Morgan (elzbethmrgn) | 303 comments In my experience, the sample is often 10ish minutes into the book - once the narrator and the story has hit their stride. I often listen to the sample because more than once I've had to return a book because I couldn't stand the narrator.

Hrmm.. this was definitely second half. Not that you'd know what it was at that point, but it even referred to a somewhat significant event.

Buzz Park (buzzpark) | 394 comments I usually bounce between the Audible and Kindle versions of a book, but mostly listened to the Audible on this one due to being in the car so much this month. I really really loved Moira Quirk's narration. She didn't narrate The Rook but she DID narrate its sequel, Stiletto which is where I've heard her before (I looked it up on Audible.com).

The only downside to mostly listening to this book is that I kept getting confused about which necromancers and cavaliers were doing what lol.

Lisa | 34 comments Yeah, listening to the audio book I think it took me about 3/4 of the book to consistently remember who was in which House.

Lee (the Book Butcher) (butcherfromgeorgia) Moira quirk narration is great. between Muir interview's I read from here and quirk performance Gideon's character felt really fleshed out. I think they both put a little of their own personalty in her. that what a good narrator or at least a well casted can do. a true advantage of audiobook imo.
