You know how a beloved author needs a few books to get into her groove? Taylor Jenkins Reid is my author of the year. I fell in love with the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and then Daisy Jones and the Six just blew me away! So now I am entering her prior works. I give any author a lot of leeway. I don't judge them by comparing every work to the best and the hottest. I like that this one was a little different, a little unusual. Its fine to me for an author to experiment with new ideas, find her voice. I am excited to read the others.
This book isn't your run of the mill love story. It's more like the pre-teen style choose your own adventure book. Its written in parallel style, what would have happened if Hannah took this turn instead of that one? The book follows the path of one fateful night, and its hard to tell which story is more engaging. Its whimsical and fun and different. And you really root for the main character Hannah. She starts with her life being a complete mess, but in both stories, she is a heroine to be proud of. And to enjoy the ride.
I have had the same experience as you in reading a favorite author's books. Many times they are uneven in their appeal - not just the earlier books but sometimes the later ones. It will be interesting to see what you think of Taylor's other books as the year goes on. Glad you enjoyed this one, Amy.
