In July 1879 George Washington DeLong and 32 others set out to explore the Arctic regions. At the time the thinking was that the North Pole was a region of warm waters that was surrounded by a ring of ice and if you could just get past the ice you would have smooth sailing. DeLong and his crew set out to prove this theory. This is their amazing story. It is a story of hope, pride, hardship, determination, and ultimately heartbreak. As we now know the North Pole isn't an area of warm waters and smooth sailing. The conditions are harsh and brutal and can be deadly. I was shocked and amazed at the conditions these men endured. They voluntarily chose to go on a journey not knowing what the conditions would be and that they could be away from family and friends for years. This was an incredible story of adventure, daring, and heartbreak. I will be thinking about this book for a long time to come.
I have had this on and off my shelf a few times-now I that know it is a worthy read, I will leave it there-someday I may even get to it! Nice review on an interesting subject (for me anyway ;)
