Our In Death Buddy Read charges ahead in March with Devoted in Death. Eve Dallas tracks a couple whose passion is fueled by cold brutality... Open discussion begins on the 8th. We invite everyone to join our discussion.

Timeline: mid-January 2061

When Lieutenant Eve Dallas examines a body in a downtown Manhattan alleyway, the victim’s injuries are so extensive that she almost misses the clue. Carved into the skin is the shape of a heart—and initials inside reading E and D . . .

Ella-Loo and her boyfriend, Darryl, had been separated while Darryl was a guest of the state of Oklahoma, and now that his sentence has been served they don’t ever intend to part again. Ella-Loo’s got dreams. And Darryl believes there are better ways to achieve your dreams than working for them. So they hit the road, and when their car breaks down in Arkansas, they make plans to take someone else’s. Then things get messy and they wind up killing someone—an experience that stokes a fierce, wild desire in Ella-Loo. A desire for Darryl. And a desire to kill again.

As they cross state lines on their way to New York to find the life they think they deserve, they will leave a trail of evil behind them. But now they’ve landed in the jurisdiction of Lieutenant Dallas and her team at the New York Police and Security Department. And with her husband, Roarke, at her side, she has every intention of hunting them down and giving them what they truly deserve . . .

Roarke, on Eve's Marriage Rules:
“You’re fond of your Marriage Rules, so add this to them. If and when you’ve the inclination to host a complete stranger to me, you don’t forget to let me know. As the next time, I might stun first, ask questions later. I’m firm on that one.”
“I suck at it, you know I do. I don’t get why you keep getting pissed that I suck at it.”
“You don’t, so when you do something that sucks, as you say, it’s very annoying.

Roarke, on how the Earth moves around the Sun:
[Roarke, to Eve:] “Who are you tagging at this hour?”
[Eve:] “Carmichael. She and Santiago can get started.”
“Eve, it’s still shy of five in the morning there.”
“Why?”
“Well, the magic elephant who carries the wide dish of the planet on its massive back moves ponderously on its daily trek around the sun.”
“Oh, bite me.” But the image he’d painted made as much sense to her as the scientific one. She decided to give her detectives another thirty minutes in the rack.

Michelle | 2650 comments Why are the last few books I read before we started this journey of reread/ buddy read not familiar to me?
Anyway looking forward to it

Phrynne | 366 comments Can't wait!

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1131 comments I'm done.
I enjoyed this one a lot probably because it fits in with my "if it bleeds, it leads" motto with regard to mysteries and thrillers, lol!

Michelle | 2650 comments Just starting and it feels like it's the first time I'm reading it.

Michelle-our last buddy read ended at book 40, Obsession. That was the latest release at that time. I know you once said you hadn't read all the books that released after that. Have you read books 41 - 50? Devoted is book 41.

Barbara "Cookie" Serfaty Williams (goodreadscomcookiew1801) | 1573 comments Great story kind of bloody.

I did mark it as read. I think I stopped after the next one. But it's all good. Can never not enjoy reading about Eve & Rourke

Where did you stop Sandra?

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
I'm not sure, Michelle. I'll have to check. Plus, I skipped ahead & read Golden because I had an arc to review.

Has anyone finished this one?

Michelle | 2650 comments I have Sandra. I just don't know what to say about this one. The case though the two was truly horrible was more about the process of finding them than anything else. Her showing up the FBI? Was like I Footnote. More and more we get to see how Eve is as a LT. From having Peabody write the report for the commander to taking a case solo. Baxter coming to her after the case. Let's not forget all the mixed metaphors. We mentioned it before but somehow hers always make so much sense.

Phrynne | 366 comments I finished it too. It was good! Worth five stars. Galahad actually scored some bacon, Eve and Peabody had some of the best dialogue ever, Eve and Roarke demonstrated how to have sex successfully in the deep end of the swimming pool, the bad guys killed 29 people. All good:)

Susan (cruelshoes) | 573 comments Robb certainly has an imagination in how the bad guys are written. Still true to each other till the end they always thought they would be together and saw no wrong with what they were doing. All for true love and they really believed it. I have to ask as I don't know if this was ever mentioned Roarke and or Eve never celebrate a birthday why is that. they celebrate every other holiday but not birthdays or did I miss something in all the books

I enjoyed the case in this one. I always enjoy being in Eve's head as she unravels things. Loved the character development as always. I liked Deputy Banner...nice seeing the NYPD & Roarke's home through his new eyes. There are some great moments in this one - Eve giving Feeney the Magic Coat!! omg loved his reaction! Bad Cop Peabody when she & Eve finally got the those two in interview...she even surprised Eve. Roarke - always Roarke - some great Roarke & Eve quotes & moments. I actually enjoyed this case...it's just fascinating to see/hear/read the case as Eve & company methodically picks through it - piece by piece unraveling the mystery of it all. This one was interesting as there was no connection between killers & victims - just random picks, making it much tougher to figure out. It made me sick that they killed for pleasure. Kind of like Bonnie & Clyde.

There were strong feelings expressed about DeWinter in the last book...Did Devoted change anyone's mind about her? I still see her as a developing character - curious at this point where Robb will take her.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments I'm not a DeWinter fan. She has skills and stands out in her field. She has all the right reactions with this case. She is angry that the initial evaluation of the bodies is so haphazard.

There is something about her personality, and her need to compete with Eve. My dislike is all feelings left over from the previous book. It doesn't have anything to do with this book. Also, I'm not a fan of her relationship with Morris.

Barbara "Cookie" Serfaty Williams (goodreadscomcookiew1801) | 1573 comments Do you think DeWinter and Morris will be the next couple?

message 20: by Sharon (new) - added it

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments Barbara it is too soon. Morris is still grieving. I hope they don't become a couple but you never know.

That's such a good question Susan. I've never noticed that. I think Eve doesn't know her birth date and just the person she is, she would never really have bothered with celebrating her birthday. As for Roarke? I almost want to say we did celebrate it once but maybe that's wishful thinking.

Michelle | 2650 comments Sandra ~ ♥ Cross My Heart ♥ wrote: "I enjoyed the case in this one. I always enjoy being in Eve's head as she unravels things. Loved the character development as always. I liked Deputy Banner...nice seeing the NYPD & Roarke's home th..."

Sandra those were some great scenes. The character development for Peabody is really growing. Finally she got to be the bad guy /gal. And boy did she deliver!

Deputy Banner really was a breathe of fresh air. I wanted to be him so bad getting to stay with Eve and Roarke. Speaking of Roarke coming across him in Eve's office and that whole scene. Another to add to there moments.

The magic coat. I wonder if McNab is next on the list {or has he gotten his already and I missed it} and what color and design that would be. At the same time I wonder how long the list could be. Maybe Nadine & Dr Mira...

As for the case. These two really was Bonnie and Clyde. The psychology of it all was just so interesting. Random picks of victims, the selfishness of it all! They truly didn't know wrong from right or care about anything but themselves. Lots that we can say about them but in the end they for caught and stopped. That is what counts.

As for Dr DeWinter? Personally the jury is still out. I think I'll make up my mind after Eve has that drink with her. Not because I want Eve input but I really haven't seen enough of her to fully know her. She's not like anyone else. She's strong both personally and professionally. I think she and Morris will be good friends. Maybe more but I don't think Morris is over Coltraine yet. And Sharon says you never know. Personally I hope not.

Barbara "Cookie" Serfaty Williams (goodreadscomcookiew1801) | 1573 comments Michell I do-not think they were another Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie and Clyde were bank robbers and kill only when they had to. They kill for the fun of it

Michelle | 2650 comments My mistake. Thanks Barbara

I do see them as a type of Bonnie & Clyde. It's true they killed as bank robbers, but they got to the point where they seemed to enjoy the killing beyond just killing when they were robbing banks. I know there are differences, but they still came to my mind when I read this. The careless disregard for life is there in both cases.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1131 comments Sharon wrote: "Barbara it is too soon. Morris is still grieving. I hope they don't become a couple but you never know."

Not sure DeWinter is the right fit for Morris, but I hope he finds someone because he deserves to be happy.

Wren | 1 comments Greetings all,

Someone on the show 'FBI: Most Wanted' must be a Robb fan. The episode, 'Predators' is about sadistic lovebirds murdering their way across the country.

Me too. It is too soon for the In Death timeline though.

Bonnie & Clyde came to my mind too. Yes, they initially started robbing banks but I think they grew to love the violence.

I'm not sure yet about DeWinter. She has a way to go for me to want her with Morris. And I agree. He is still grieving.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments I really loved this one. I enjoyed how Eve and her group gradually figured out who these people were. And Peabody playing bad cop...priceless!

What I love most about these books is the interaction between all the characters. And how all of their relationships continue to grow.

Michelle | 2650 comments That was a moment. Peabody as the bad cop.

Peabody has come such a long way. From being a beat cop to detective. I love how we get to see everyone also on this journey.
