Tally Youngblood lives in a dystopian world where all people are Uglies … until they have a surgery at age 16 and are turned into physically perfect Pretties. Tally is 15, soon to be 16, and looking forward to the surgery so that she can join her friend Peris in New Prettytown. But in the meantime, she becomes good friends with Shay, who tells her about The Smoke - a place where they can go live if they don't want to have the surgery. So Tally has a decision to make. Go with Shay and be ugly forever? Or have the surgery and lose her new friend?

My review: This book was OK. Definitely a young adult book, but I've read better young adult books. Portions of the book really dragged for me (view spoiler)[(like Tally's extremely long journey to The Smoke) (hide spoiler)](, but what I really didn't like was that Tally didn't seem very smart. She seemed a little unprepared, having to make up stories and lies on the fly that weren't very good. She said Um … or Maybe … a lot. This happens to all of us on occasion, but it was like she almost never thought ahead to what might happen next! But the overall concept of the book was good, so I'll read the next one also.
