message 6: by Meliza (new)

Meliza (mecawish) | 9 comments I think Station Eleven counts. :) Hearing a lot of good reviews about that book.

Lauren Henderson (laurhender) I'm deciding between The Martian and Red Rising. I've heard great things about both.

Or Ernest Cline's new book, Armada, comes out in July 2015. Can't wait!! If you haven't read Ready Player One, it's also perfect for this challenge.

I can't wait for Armada!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I have so much Sci-Fi waiting to be read the real challenge here will be choosing which to count for this task! I'll probably pick an author I've been meaning to read for ages now like Octavia E. Butler. One of my personal lifetime reading goals is to work my way through the major speculative fiction awards winners and nominees (like the Hugos, etc).

message 16: by Amii (new)

Amii | 12 comments The Martian-Andy weir

message 17: by Robin P (new)

Robin P Yes, you don't have to be a sic-fi lover to appreciate The Martian. The author claims that everything in it could really happen, if not now, in the near future, and it's mostly a great adventure (with laughs!)

Karin (8littlepaws) | 119 comments I think I am the only person that didn't like The Martian! I found it very technical and couldn't get interested in the characters.

message 19: by Giuliana (new)

Giuliana (giulianaalfredo) | 1 comments Does it need to be strictilly sci-fi or does fantasy also counts?

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 15 comments FYI: January 2 is National Science Fiction Day

With that in mind, I think I'm going to start 2015 with my sci-fi book.

Nicole | 4 comments does Anne Rice count add sci-fi?

message 22: by ☕Laura (new)

☕Laura | 30 comments I don't usually read sci-fi, but Daughters of the North is by one of my very favorite authors, and seems to qualify as "sci-fi" since it was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke award.

message 23: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (suzystjohn) | 18 comments I have A Mote in God's Eye I am wanting to read, but also eyeballing The Martian, and The Doomsday Book.

Bailey Holden | 5 comments wooo! i'm well on my way.
Kurt Vonnegut - Cat's Cradle
3/24

message 28: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) If you don't like hard core sci-fi, maybe try an alternate history novel (which is included in the sci-fi Genre) like "The Yiddish Policeman's Union" by Michael Chabon. It won 4 different awards - Hugo, Nebula, Locus, & Sideways. I haven't read it yet but it was highly recommended to me by a young bookstore clerk.

I was thinking about this one too! It'll probably be that or A Canticle for Leibowitz (St. Leibowitz, #1) by Walter M. Miller Jr. by Walter M. Miller Jr. But whichever I end up picking for this specific task, I intend to read both by the end of the year anyway.

message 30: by Laura (new)

Laura Spaulding I'm reading Station Eleven trying to decide if I should use it as Sci-fi or Award Winner

Jennifer (jcreamer) | 30 comments I read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood for this task. I loved the book, but I'll have to read something uplifting next.

message 36: by Roachie (new)

Roachie Carol wrote: "Is this category strictly Sci-Fi or does fantasy count too?"

Since Fantasy is considered a sub-genre of Scifi, I say go for it.

message 37: by Roachie (new)

Roachie Nicole wrote: "does Anne Rice count add sci-fi?"

I think Anne Rice is generally considered Horror or Dark Fantasy.

message 38: by Tammi (new)

Tammi | 5 comments Nicole wrote: "Would Neil Gaiman's American Gods be considered sci-fi?"

I have read American Gods and I definitely would not consider it to be Sci-Fi, but more Fantasy. As a reader of both Sci-Fi and Fantasy, I consider them to be very different genres.

message 39: by ☕Laura (new)

☕Laura | 30 comments I am not usually a sci-fi fan, but I love Sarah Hall so I read Daughters of the North and thought it was very well-done.

message 40: by Amanda (last edited Jan 28, 2015 02:58PM) (new)

Amanda (darkhart) Just finished The Drift Wars today for my sci-fi requirement. I liked it :-)

I would definitely second Tammi on this - they might both be considered speculative fiction, but scifi and fantasy are completely different from each other otherwise; fantasy is definitely not a sub-genre. Sometimes authors will do some funky things where there seems some overlap - magic + tech somehow, but that is something rather different too.

message 42: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Mary | 6 comments Would Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut count?

message 43: by Brianna Graham (new)

Brianna Graham I think that for people who do not read a lot of Sci-Fi or Fantasy, I would not focus too much on whether the book you choose is more Sci-Fi over Fantasy. I read a lot in both of these genres and DO consider them to be similar and even overlap sometimes. Read whatever YOU THINK is Sci Fi, as long as you are reading! :)

I understand why it is such a big hit. Sci-Fi isn't an easy genre for me to read which is why I went to a YA book for this category. Thanks for the question! Eva

message 48: by Brenna (new)

Brenna (brebooklover) I read The Martian by Andy Weir for this task. Wow. This book was wonderful! It was hilarious and suspenseful. If people are new to sciFi I think this is a great book to start off the genre with.

message 49: by Srividya (new)

Srividya Rao | 24 comments Hope fantasy also counts. Just finished Game of Thrones.A Game of Thrones A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

message 50: by Anushree (new)

Anushree Already read Golden Son by Pierce Brown for this one, but I am sure I'll come across more.
This one was fantastic - second in a trilogy, but surely one of the best sci-fi I've ever read.
