Play Book Tag discussion

This book had everything I look for in a FLDS memoir. The scandal, the escape, the survival, the education on the topic, everything. Rachel Jeffs is one of Warren Jeff's eldest daughters. This paired with her escape being more recent (2014), and the book being more modern (2017) really gave a unique perspective on the FLDS, and specifically the Jeffs family.

I've read quite a few of these FLDS memoirs- and this one packed a punch, and still had true shock value. Triggers for basically anything, but especially neglect and abuse- it's quite insane how the cult treats its members, and especially its children. The tone is young, the writing isn't the best- but I don't think that detracts from the story at all. I appreciated that we not only see the bad, but also how living within the community alters your perception- it's basically brainwashing, but when you are born into a society that holds these values true- how could you not think that polygamy is normal?

This follows Rachel Jeffs upbringing- how family life changes with multiple marriages, with the growing clan of children. We see her married off, and learning how to cope as a plural wife. We see the changes in the FLDS once Jeffs goes into jail. How he maintains control while behind bars. We ache for her being punished, and see the unjust situation she is put into. We get a glimpse into her head, and how it changed from "good little FLDS girl" to "I need to get out of here".

This sounds like one I should add...

I am reading Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith right now. Although I thought I knew a bit about the FLDS-I knew nothing-nice review Joi.
