Here you can find the 25 categories for this year's book challenge. Some are repeats from last year, some are suggestions from our lovely 2014 readers, and some are ones I pulled out of thin air. I will give a brief description for ones that may need a little more explaining, but you can discuss them at length in their specific category discussion board or shoot us a question at our moderator board.
True Crime
Short Stories - A book of short stories, not just one short story
Humor
Horror
Biography/memoir
Award Winner - This can be any award from a Caldecott to a Goodreads winner!
Non-fiction
Classic
Mystery
Young Adult Fiction
Accidentally Watched the Movie First - It was a book, then it was a movie. Maybe you snuck and watched the movie first, or you had no idea it was ever a book.
Author Who Writes Under a Pseudonym - Pretty self-explanatory, but a book by an author who writes under a name that is not their own
Historical Fiction - while Pam and I both loathe historical fiction, it was in high demand, so you're welcome. We will complain the whole time. :)
Action/Adventure
Science Fiction
Fantasy - We had some requests for Science Fiction, and because I know hardcore fans would argue that SF and fantasy are totally different - and I see their point - I made two separate categories.
Gathering Dust - A crowd favorite! Read a book that you've been neglecting to read or that is "gathering dust" on your shelves.
Secret Santa - Find someone in the group to be your Secret Santa and assign you a book to read. This can be someone you know or a total stranger. The Secret Santa board will be the place to ask around if anyone wants to be your Secret Santa.
Cover Story - Pick and read a book without seeing anything but the front cover. In other words, judge this book by its cover, and judge it hard.
Chunker - Read a book over 600 pages
Author’s First Book - It can be a wildly popular author or someone no one has ever heard of - doesn't matter! Find out what their first published book was and read it!
Wildcard - Per the request of one creative 2014 reader, a category in which you can choose whatever you want to read.
Required Reading - Choose a book that is popular "required reading" for middle or high school students. There are several lists on Goodreads full of ideas for this category. This is the only category on the list in which you may reread a book - if you loved it in high school and have been wanting to reread it since, go for it!
2015 Books to Movies - If it's going to be a movie in 2015, chances are it was a book first. Pick one and give it a go!
Children’s Book - Any children's book would do, but young adult does not count in this category. It must be something appropriate for children under the age of 12 to read.
