We are soliciting nominations for the June 2020 read for books published during the period 1940-1959, which we are calling "The Golden Age".

SF novels or short story collection/anthologies that have not previously been read by the group are eligible. Please check the previously-read bookshelf & the nomination rules for further clarification before nominating a book.

Previously nominated books from this period are on this bookshelf. You are free to re-nominate them. More qualifying authors & books can be found in this discussion.

Please add your nominated book title as a clickable link directly to the goodreads' book page, with author and year, so it looks like this:
Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, 2015
(If you can't create book links, please include the URL to the book.)

Tell us why you chose the book that you're nominating. Remember that books require seconding now. Each member is allowed to make one nomination & second one other book other than their own.

We'll close this nomination thread on the 15th of April, in order to have plenty of time for poll(s) and then for acquisitions of the winner(s).

Current nominations:
The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney. (Also know as "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".) Nom by Rafael, Second by Jim.
The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke. Nom by Forthencho. Second by Adrian
The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. Nom by Jack. Second by me (Ed).
Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement. Nom by Oleksandr. Second by RJ.

Yes, but it was not published between 1940 and 1959.

I second Triffids.
Jack, a third has no effect, so you are free to second something later, such as if I come up with a brilliant nomination.

message 15: by Jack (new)

Jack | 9 comments I'll keep that in mind. Cheers Ed!

Oleksandr Zholud | 1390 comments Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement, first published 1954, nominated for Retro Hugo in 2004

I'll second Mission of Gravity because I have it on my shelf and, unlike the other nominations, I haven't already read it.

I found out the same thing myself. Most of the books I want to read during that period I have already read. So far this would be the one I would vote for since I have it on my PC but never got around to putting it on my Kindle to read.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 4367 comments Whoops! I just realized I should have made the poll 3 days ago. Well, I did it tonight, so nominations are closed & the poll is up. You'll find it here:

The winner of the poll was "The Body Snatchers", so that is what we'll read in June.

The poll was very nearly tied, so speak up if you think we should or should not add the second-place book "The City and the Stars". There may not be enough of us to support reading two books and this one could always be read later. Thoughts?....

message 21: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 619 comments I think we could read The City and the Stars later. I voted for it but I have lots of other books to read so I can wait a while. But I do want to read it sometime!

Happy to read later, but its definitely on my list.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) | 887 comments I've read City and the Stars, and I might have read it twice, I can't remember for sure. I also read Against the Fall of Night, which was the basis for City and the Stars, and I even read Beyond the Fall of Night. Since I didn't rate any of those higher than 3 stars I don't think I'll be reading them a second time, but I'll be happy to join in the discussion.
