Lilia (oldgeekwoman) I read this article a couple of years ago, and although there is another similar essay published earlier, the content is what matters: Confessions of a Book Abuser

I must confess that I am a "book abuser". I don't mind cracked spines, I write on the pages or fold the top corner of a page if there's a quote I liked.

So... how do you treat your books?

Tressa (moanalisa) Can't stand to break the spines on my books, although I do lay them open and face down occasionally, but cringe whenever I do.

Won't turn down a corner.

Anna (lilfox) | 53 comments My sister was constantly laying books open and face down. I was always yelling on her when she treated my books like that. Thank God she moved out. I write on the pages and use highlighter if the book is for a laguage classes or the book I used for my classes at the university. Those for university I was mostly xeroxing cause I needed either only part of it or whole just for one semester - in such a situation cost of the book was too high for me to buy it, write and mark things on it and than after 4 months just throw it away.

Gail | 9 comments I'm with Anna. I do highlight and write in some of my books. I do that with school books( I just finished my masters), but I found myself writing and highlighting a lot in Shadow of the Wind.

Sarah I actually enjoy abusing my school books! What else is there to do during boring classes?
But books I read and buy for fun I treat with so much respect that everyone is practically laughing at me.
I would never break the spine of a book! or put it laying face down! Even when I read I'm afraid to open them too much so as not to ruin the spine.
I used to go as far as placing some other heavy book or flat object on top of the book I was currently reading, just to flatten it down a bit. But I'm rid of that habid, thankfully.

Anna (lilfox) | 53 comments My friend for entrance exam to sociology abused completely the book she had to read (questions about that book were important part of the exam). The book was so totally highlighted that my friend had to put a heavy object to close it.

I think they are somehow made for it.
