Not sure when libraries are going to be open again, so changing May's book to something folks can get online for free. Carnacki, the Ghost Finder by William Hope Hodgson. STAY SAFE EVERYONE! (Moving Audrey Rose to October.)

Cheryl | 1167 comments Thank you for doing this, Adelaide! My library here in Georgia won’t open until possibly May 14 (but you can get a tattoo and a massage on Friday - don’t get me started!). Even then, it’s an interlibrary loan, and those can take three weeks when there’s not a pandemic.

I’ve read a few short stories by William Hope Hodgson and two of his books, and I’ve enjoyed them all. I’m looking forward to reading this one.

Sarah (sarahmott) | 463 comments Stay safe Cherryl. We are thinking of you.

I might just redo our book selections for the next couple of months to public domain stuff. Who knows when we are going to feel comfortable checking out books again. And yes, take care Cheryl!!!

Cheryl | 1167 comments Thanks for the moral support! I had to got to the grocery store yesterday, and driving there I passed a nail salon, a hair salon, and a gym. All were still staying closed, which I was glad to see. Not everyone here is going to just jump into this re-opening. Stay safe, everyone!

Cheryl | 1167 comments Great news! All three of my area libraries will open - in limited capacity - on Tuesday May19th! One will be order online with curbside pick up. The other 2 will let in 30 people at a time for 1 hour (and also do online order with curbside pick up). Interlibrary loans also restart, but will be slower than normal at first, as they deal with the sudden onslaught of book requests. There is hope at last!

YAY for curbside pickup!

Sarah (sarahmott) | 463 comments I wish there was a library where I could get curbside pickup of books, wine, and pastries.

Ha! Start your own.

Cheryl | 1167 comments I looked at the group’s bookshelf, to see which upcoming books I need to put on hold at my library (which will take alot longer now). I see we will be reading The Secret Adversary in July. What a coincidence! I was going to read that book next. Now I’ll wait and read it with the group. (It’s more fun that way.)

Haha!

I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have the next few months still be public domain to give folks a little more time. Seattle libraries will be closed for awhile yet. (Although we have a great ebooks selection.)

Cheryl | 1167 comments I'm not sure where to post this, but I had a general question about the quarantine and when you'll feel safe to go places once they open.

- beauty salons: when will you get a hair cut? As soon as the doors open, or will you still wait? How long?
- library: will you immediately feel safe browsing the stacks? If not, how long will you wait? Will you just go in the pick up Holds?

I ask because I am in a state that has basically opened alot up (restaurants included, yikes!) but still feel uncomfortable going to these places . They all have mandated that the workers wear masks and gloves, but there is no law stating the general public must wear them. (I think the beauty salons do, at least mine does.) BUT, how long do I wait? Forever? Until everyone gets a vaccine?

What are your thoughts on this?

Sarah (sarahmott) | 463 comments I’m going to wait and see how it works out for everyone who has decided the quarantine is over for them. Maybe a month or two. If the virus flares up again, I’m staying at home.

Cheryl | 1167 comments I have seen such lazy behavior with masks and distancing in my town just when I go to the grocery store and pharmacy (the only places I go). I see people maskless, including older people. I saw an old man pull his mask down and cough in his hand, then pull his mask up. (I left immediately.) I've seen people wearing masks but letting their nostrils stick out over the mask.

I saw an older maskless woman complementing another social-distanced woman on her colorful mask, but also saying that "you really don't need a mask now, since the quarantine is over". This same woman had a little girl with her, also maskless, and the girl was bored and resting her chin on the countertop of the check out area in front of the credit card scanner - at the pharmacy! The older woman saw, and didn't tell her not to do that. (I moved to the next check out lane instead.) You can't even tell people about it, for fear they will act out (shoot you, even) against you. It's scary out there!

Sarah (sarahmott) | 463 comments Two guys without masks walked by me the other day and pointed at my mask. They said, “Do you vote Democrat?” And I said “I vote Darwin.”

Yes, there's some "natural selection" going on out there. Unfortunately, they'll probably infect alot of innocent vulnerable people on the way out.

Since I have an autoimmune disease, we are being extra careful, so I probably won't be going much of anywhere until there is a vaccine. Will be doing small group outside things over the summer, but only if we can maintain distance. My immune system overreacts to everything (including me) and we have no idea how it is going to react to this nastiness.

That's challenging, Adelaide, but a smart way to handle things. I sure hope that vaccine is available soon. I know I'll be one of the first in line in my town to get it.
