Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4771 comments I can see why so many people absolutely love this book. It starts out by introducing Rosemarie, a young and mysterious clerk recently hired by the captain of an interstellar ship named the Wayfarer. There, she meets the ship’s diverse crew. There’s Lovey (the ship’s Artificial Intelligence), Jenks and Kizzy (the techs), Sissix (the pilot), Corbin, (the fuel algeist), Dr. Chef (the doctor and cook), Ohan (the navigator), and Ashby (the ship’s captain). Together they’re responsible for opening up hyperspace lanes between various parts of space, allowing interstellar communications and transportation to commence.

At the start of the book, the Wayfarer picks up a big contract to open a tunnel between Galactic Commons space and Toremi Ka space. Expanding their workload and making lots more money is something they have been wanting to do for a long time.

The plot meanders along at a steady pace but the character-centric nature of the story means there is not an overabundance of action. This book is all about the journey and in fact, it felt a bit random at times, especially as the crew experienced one encounter after another in the depths of space. This is a story about the characters and their individual arcs. The author had to balance nine characters and their stories, and each one really did have their own arc.

I could not wait to return to this book every time I had to stop. I listened to the audio which was a heartwarming tale filled with hope and love. This book is all about the characters, each one touching and poignant. it's one of the best ensemble casts of characters I've ever read.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11071 comments I read all three books in this trilogy this tear, and I really enjoyed them. I liked the characters in this book, and the focus on culture and diversity. The alien species were all so different and interesting. The language translator boxes sounded like a great idea for a new tech app! Book two was my favorite.

The third book focuses on a community that is guided by socialistic values (without using the terminology). Bernie fans would love it, and I think even people who are afraid of socialism would find it appealing. I think I’ll send these to my niece (a strong Bernie fan).
