This discussion will be lead by Valliya. The discussion leader will be here to help keep the conversation going. Look out for comments and questions the discussion leader might make and respond back to them!

Wera (valliya) Hi all! I will be the discussion leader for this month. I hope everyone will enjoy this book. I am around 60 pages in so far and I'm getting a vibe of Six of Crows crossed with Skyward so I am HYPED! What are your guys's first impressions?

Vera The first chapter with Tyler had me laughing so hard. I already love him so much.

hi, guys, I'm new here, so I'd like to ask: we will buddy read this book and comment as we go?

Wera (valliya) @Kelly

hi! to answer your question, kind of. As you read you can comment here your general thoughts and impressions. If you want to talk spoilers use the < spoiler > tag. I will be posting questions here and hopefully we will have a great discussion! Hope that kind of answered your question.

Nancy (bookword_925) | 10 comments Wow what a coincidence, I'm reading this book on my Kindle right now!

Ruthie (ruthieram_reads) | 45 comments I actually already finished this because I requested it from the library in anticipation for this buddy read but my hold came through early and the app I was using didn't let me delay the library hold.

I do remember my first impression and that I was sucked in and liked it right away and really enjoyed the banter between the characters right from the start.

As I kept going I started liking it more and more and it was hard to pause (I was listening to the audiobook which is very well done with multiple narrators and good sound effects)

I ended up giving it 5 stars and I am so excited for the next one coming out this month.

Ruxi (The Lightning Reader) My first impression of Aurora Rising was that it felt like Six of crows and The Heroes of Olympus, but in space:) I hear the audiobook is really good for this book, feels like you're watching a movie!

message 10: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 13 comments Hi! I just read the first chapter and I really liked it! I cannot wait to read more :).

message 11: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) So I was thinking. In the Aurora Legion there are Alphas, Faces, Aces, Tanks, Gearheads, and Brains.

Which one do you think you would be?

I think I would be an Ace. I really would love to pilot a space ship!

message 12: by sara (new)

sara Brains all the way

Nancy (bookword_925) | 10 comments Face, I really like Scar

Mirah M. (mirah_reads) | 2 comments I've got a question.
Do we have a schedule or something to read according to it, or we just go with our own pace?

message 15: by sara (new)

sara We usually go by our own pace unless the discussion leader mentions anything specifically

Mirah M. (mirah_reads) | 2 comments @Valliya Gearhead, definitely. I've got a passion for fixing mechanical stuff😂

Erica | 175 comments Oh I read this last year and really enjoyed it. I don't know where I'd fit in the legion.

Krystal (krystallee6363) Read this when it first came out last year but definitely want to re-read before I read the new one! I remember the ending having me desperate for the sequel lol so it will be nice to actually have it this time!

message 19: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) Did anyone finish part 1 yet?

If so, thoughts? (all spoilers under the < spoiler > tag)

message 20: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura | 5 comments Hi all! I am in part 3 now, and I think I would be a brain if I had to choose.

I'll probably be in the minority here, but I haven't been enjoying this book much. All the voices are so similar, they even have the same type of humor/sarcasm, I don't think I'd know right away who was speaking if it weren't for their names at the beginning of the chapter. I'm also kind of frustrated that Zila has practically no voice in this, and very little mention by other characters. What a miss, as I would love to know more about her! And feels kind of like a slight to introverted (?) shy (?) people. I don't know what to call it, because we no nothing of her or why she's so quiet!

I'm already over Cat's disklike of Aurora and the obvious jealousy.
I'm tired of hearing of Tyler's good looks and dimples/mentions of the entire cast's looks - way too much focus put there. Less looks, more personality, please!

message 21: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Laura yeah I see your opinion 100%! Thanks for your thoughtful comment :)

I really liked part 1. Part 2 felt not that great. Part 3 is a struggle but I absolutely see how other people can really like it. I'm holding off judgement until later. I really do like the world and the Aurora Legion stuff though!

What are some other people's thoughts ?

Amanda Carle St-Jacques Ace or Tank for me. I would love to be a pilot and also have had an interest in martial arts for most of my life.

message 23: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 13 comments Definitely brains

message 24: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 13 comments So, I just read Part 1 and I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the story. So many questions! I agree with @Laura though. The way the characters talk is very similar. I liked it for Tyler in the first chapter, but now it's not so special anymore. The characters that do stand out for me are Kal and Zila, but I think the other characters are growing on me as well.

message 25: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Lisa yeah I found Kal really cool! The entire the "Enemy Within" seemed interesting. I always wondered if it is one person inside him or two or if he is bipolar? What do you guys think?

message 26: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura | 5 comments Ok I just finished it and while my overall feelings haven't changed and I didn't particularly care for it, part 3 was definitely the best so I'm glad I finished it.

Also, I got an ebook version from my library that had a quiz at the end to see where in the squad you would fall - Brain, Gearhead, Ace, etc. I took it and got Brain! Check it out to see if your version has the quiz, too, and tell us what you get! No worries, there are no spoilers in the quiz so you can take it wherever you are currently in the book.

message 27: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Laura

Wow that's so cool you have a quiz! Glad you liked the ending! Are you going onto book 2 now?

message 28: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura | 5 comments @Valliya I wouldn't say I "liked" the ending, it was just the best part of the book 😃 More story, less dimples lol

My overall feelings haven't changed - the voices are too similar, I couldn't connect with the characters - who were much more capable than I expected (I was looking forward to some fumbling!), and thee focus on everyone's outfits and dimples and looks in the first 2/3, and all that turned me off enough that I won't be reading the sequel, it's just not an enjoyable style for me.

I definitely see why it's so popular though, and I hope everyone finds the sequel enjoyable if they liked this one!

Misty | 119 comments I adored the book! I like all the comparisons in this thread. I thought about it like if Six of Crows and the Lunar Chronicles had a baby.

I think I'd like to be a Brains or a Tank, but I love how each of them are so competent and amazing at their job.

I also loved the conversation Auri and Kal have at the end of the book. I cannot wait to read the sequel!

message 30: by Zece (new) - rated it 1 star

Zece Hii, I don’t think many of you think this but I didn’t enjoy the book. Part 1 was amazing and I was really excited to read the rest. I think the other two parts are a disappointment after the setup. I found myself struggling to understand which character I was reading and I wanted more character development, specially from Zila. There was so much potential but if didn’t fulfil my expectations but I get why people like it. If it had kept the quality of the first part, it’d have been amazing.
Also; I think I’d be a Tank or Ace

message 31: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) Great comment @Zeynep!

Anyone else have some final thoughts?

message 32: by Neva (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neva (nevanescence) | 3 comments I’m on part 2 and I really enjoyed the set up so far. I feel like this group is a bunch of misfits and I really hope they all become friends because I love cheesy friendship endings.. but I’m guessing a romance will sneak in there. I’m curious about Zila’s character because I feel like she could have ASD based on her behavior so far? She doesn’t seem great at socializing but is super intelligent and driven.

message 33: by Kelly (new) - added it

Kelly (kelly_ramos) is it too late to start now?

message 34: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Kelly No totally no! Start reading now and share what you think :D

Ruthie (ruthieram_reads) | 45 comments Valliya wrote: "@Lisa yeah I found Kal really cool! The entire the "Enemy Within" seemed interesting. I always wondered if it is one person inside him or two or if he is bipolar? What do you guys think?"

I agree that this aspect was really cool and I'm excited to find out more. Maybe the "enemy within" has to do with how he was trained and his base instincts like the other instincts mentioned in the book and he's trying to fight against those instincts to do the right thing. We will see in Book 2!

I also loved the conversation Auri and Kal have at the end of the book. ---I agree with this!!! Can't wait till the sequel either

message 37: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 13 comments I just finished part 2 and I'm not disappointed at all. The characters still talk kind off similar, but it doesn't bother me anymore. I think we get to know the characters a bit better in part 2. Kal, however, is one big question mark for me. I've got the feeling he knows more about Auri and her situation than he's letting on. Hopefully part 3 will have some answers!

Halie (haliedanielle) I loved the book. I think I would be an Ace! Aurora was by far my favorite because of how strong willed she is. I’m hoping the second book continues exploring her and Kal’s romance. AND by some miracle Cat survived and will return. Here’s to wishful thinking.

message 39: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Ruthie glad you liked it!

message 40: by Dalia (new) - added it

Dalia | 183 comments I just started this book an so far I’m not sure how I feel. I really don’t like it when books start and then theyre like, “but let me start from the beginning.”

message 41: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Dalia

be sure to keep us updated at how you enjoy it!

message 42: by Neva (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neva (nevanescence) | 3 comments I agree that the first part was the best part, there were a lot of coincidences to the point where I almost wanted something to be irrelevant to their goal.. But thats probably because its a YA book. Does anyone else think there should be more linguistic differences between Aurora and everyone else due to the 200 year gap? I think language would change a lot in that time.

message 43: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Neva OMG yeah! I never thought about that! I'm sure that the everyday language would have changed... great point!

message 44: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura | 5 comments @Neva definitely, great point!
I also thought it odd that there were things that seemed out of place. Like, would they really know "ashes ashes we all fall down", and there were some other references I can't quite remember but that just didn't seem fitting considering how far into the future this was and that they were in space.

message 45: by Dalia (new) - added it

Dalia | 183 comments How does Scarlett know Latin? Latin is a dead language now, but 300 years in the future it would be completely extinct.

Gabrielle (bookmarkedgab) (strudalzzz) I am just about to finish the book (about 40 ebook pages left) and it has honestly blown me away!! I have also kind of picked up some of the other criticisms that were mentioned, like knowing ring around the rose?? and Latin?? but honestly I still feel like this book is totally 5 stars for me regardless of the odd coincidences. its the only one so far this year!! (and also side note, i would die for Kal, no lie)

message 47: by Wera (new) - rated it 3 stars

Wera (valliya) @Gabrielle

Glad you loved it !

Lisa | 13 comments I really liked this book and I'm definetly continuing the series!

What did you think of the Pull? I thought this part was a little bit rushed. The feelings were just there and I wished we could have read more from Kal's point of view, especially in part 2. I hope the next book will elaborate on the Pull further.

Yes I liked it and hope the 2nd talks about the pull more! It reminded me of SJ Maas books

I think it will because Kal is on the cover. I’m about 100 pages from finishing the first book though.
