I'd like to introduce myself.
I've just published "Hitler's Time Machine," now on Kindle and in print. It's an alternate history of men and women on both sides in the race to develop a time machine during World War II.
On the German side is Die Glocke (the Bell), a time machine well known to those who study the lore of this era. On the American side, the chief scientist is a young woman who has never held a job.
I've read about time travel in works by H. G. Wells, Jack Finney, Dean Koontz and others. I'm a fan of Chuck Dixon's "Bad Times" series of time-travel novels. I wanted to try writing a time travel story of my own. "Hitler's Time Machine" is the result.
It's my first fiction.
My by-line and brand is "Robert F. Dorr" (I hate it when the middle initial is left out, but can't keep Goodreads from doing so) and when we're talking, I'm Bob. I had my first magazine article published in 1955, so I've been writing non-fiction for 60 years. My previous published work includes seventy-some books and thousands of magazine articles and newspaper columns. Many know me for the columns I wrote in Air Force Times newspaper and Aerospace America magazine.
I'm an Air Force veteran (1957-60) and a retired Foreign Service officer (1964-1989). Until now, all of my writing has been non-fiction and most if it has been about the Air Force. There's a lot of information about me and my family on the Internet, including a Wikipedia entry.
I live in Oakton, Virginia, with my wife and Labrador retriever, Autumn, who devours my work. She doesn't read it. She eats it. We have two grown sons with families.
Writing "Hitler's Time Machine" was educational and fun. Now, I want to see if others enjoy it. Official publication date was December 20 and early reaction looks promising.
I don't know a lot about how Goodreads works but I look forward to exchanging comments about time travel and its place in literature.

And Bob's message just reminded me of a PC-platform strategy game's story. (The game is Red Alert 3 by EA games by the way.) It also has a similar story in which the USSR tries to take advantage of a time machine by going back in time, killing Einstein and thus preventing an atomic bomb, which the Allies uses and wins the battle, to be produced and winning the WWII. I would love to read Bob's book as it is so interesting to me.
Anyway, I talked too much :) I would love to hear such alternative history-time travel-dystopian books.

I just completed my first book of the year, The Count of Monte Cristo, the original very long book, which was hard to put down. You may already be aware of Project Gutenberg.org. If not, they have made books in the public domain available for free-more than 47,000 free books. Worth browsing.
If I had been asked a few years ago what I liked to read, I would have said politics and history. But I have been reading a wide variety to see what other writers have done. There are an amazing number of brilliant stories out there. I even read a vampire book and a romance novel. I like fantasy, love Harry Potter, and would like to be a great storyteller. I've also read a great deal about how to write fiction, as well as book marketing. You can find me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/cabinfeverco... or on Twitter @sternmike52. I have a not so good web page,http://www.cabinfeverwriting.com, which I'm still trying to figure out. But he old dog is learning new tricks.
I live in southern New Jersey, outside Philadelphia, with my family, and Katie, our Wheaten terrier.
Nice to meet you all. I'm looking forward to future conversations here. A thought-I think all fiction is time travel even if we are the time machine and travel to the past, the future, and to the strangest of new and old worlds.

If I could time travel... Assuming I could get back, I'd like to go back and see the birth of Christ and see if it unfolded like a Nativity scene or not. Maybe that's just the Christmas spirit still lingering. Changing history IMO seems like a very difficult prospect - like trying to overfill a bathtub by spitting into it. One event I might be able to change would be the space shuttle disaster (pick one). Totally preventable and -if averted- could have kept the program running for another 10 years.

Welcome Jack,
I don't lucid dream much, but when I do I can't help but flying or running at incredible speeds. Feel free to share your opinion on Replay and despite missing the discussion perhaps you can strike up a few late comers...Perhaps replay deserves a Replay.
Feel free to comment and participate. Welcome Welcome!!

Welcome Michelle,
To bad your Timebound....I like your suggestion to go back and read all the books....

I'm Canadian, found Goodreads and stumbled over this Group. And I'm already participating in the forums... it was kind of unavoidable.

I've read lots of books in my life and some of them have been about time travel. The first science fiction book I remember reading was "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. I've read many others since then, but that one still remains my favorite because it inspired me to read other science fiction books. I also enjoy reading books on science (for the layperson) including physics, etymology, and archaeology. I also like history. Some of my interests make themselves apparent in my recently published novel.
I've written several novels over the years. My first has not been published (yet!). It's about the early days of basketball in Indiana and is based on research I've done about the beginnings of basketball and how it became so ingrained in the lives of Indiana's small town residents. I'm tweaking it so that I can publish it as an ebook. I recently completed my second novel and, after attempting with no success to find a publisher, decided to self-publish. It's now on Amazon and can be found at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TJAFQ3S. It's also available at Barnes and Noble at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/delve....
I'm desperate for reviews (good or bad). I'll gift the book to the first ten people wishing to read it. If you'll take me up on the offer, send me a message on Goodreads with your email address and your choice of format (Kindle or Nook). Don't feel badly if you have to trash the book. I just need someone I don't know to read it and provide honest feedback.
Here's the book description as shown on Amazon and Barnes & Noble:
Proterio "Proto" Lightner was only killing time with an assorted collection of electronics when he inadvertently launched a minicam into another time and another place. Proto's quiet and unassuming life would change, perhaps forever, after his identity becomes known to the World and he is faced with the mounting pressures of law enforcement agencies, the media, and even his friends. Having sworn never to share the details of his secret with anyone, will Proto collapse under pressure and give it all up? Will those he helped stand with him or demand even more from him? Will his visits to the past eventually drive him out of his mind? The answers to these questions lie within the pages of DELVER: The Time Camera of Proto Lightner.
I agonized over the book title for quite a while, and after consulting with friends and family finally arrived at "DELVER: The Time Camera of Proto Lightner." I honestly didn't realize there is an entire series of DELVER books (even after Googling the word) until my book was published and it was listed on the Amazon page with all the other DELVER books! Then I considered re-titling it and came up with a replacement title but, this time, carefully checked before finalizing it and discovered that even more books had my second choice title. So I left the original title alone. I learned quite a bit about epublishing in the process, but I still know very little about the marketing part as you can probably see.
I have also authored a collection of opening lines of novels titled "Novel Openers: First Sentences of 11,000 Fictional Works." It was published in the Nineties by McFarland & Company and is now out of print, although it can still be found here and there in libraries, bookstores, and online. Check it out at http://www.amazon.com/Novel-Openers-S....
My blog is at http://earthdump.com.
Thanks for reading my introduction.

I look forward to seeing what everyone is reading and following the discussions here.
And...I have recently ventured into writing historical time travel. The Night Medicine is the title of my new release and is an action/adventure novel that takes the reader to Blackfoot territory and the mining town of Helena, Montana in 1868. If you would like more info, here is link:

Cheers and happy reading!

However, the ending always haunted me "One cannot choose but wonder. Will he ever return?" Every sequel I read left me unsatisfied and lacked the H.G. style. So in 1987 I decided to write my own vision of a proper ending. So after studying the writing style of the period and world events of the time, I worked on it off and on--gave up and started over many times--but finally in May of 2010 I finished it!! In spite of being a work of fiction a large amount of research went into it. Once the reader accepts the reality of a time machine all else that takes place is very much in the realm of possibility. I do hope that I hear from members of the time travel community,to answer questions or just to chat. Hope you take the time to check it out EPILOGUE: TIME MACHINE CHRONICLES..Takes off on the very next morning after the Time Traveler's return. I look forward to being a member of the time travel community and participating in the discussions. Thanks for your----time. Jim Epilogue: Time Machine Chronicles

Two new things happened today: I joined this group and published my first novel on Amazon. All in all it's been a really good day! What I'd really like is advice on navigating this group and some expert eyeballs to give my manuscript a read.
THE DETAILS
(It can be found on Amazon http://amzn.com/B00VOGPWWU)
Vincent Albine had two seemingly clear-cut tasks, commit a murder that was necessary to prevent a time paradox and write an exhaustive report on a singular event in history, but nothing is ever black and white. Soon after he begins his life as a humble reporter, hundreds of years before his own birth, in a city that is both unfamiliar and hostile, he begins to understand that there is more to the facts than the mere details. Haunted by the memories of an abusive instructor and the family he left behind, he follows a ritualistic and disciplined life as outlined in the strict guidelines set forth by The Program he is employed by. But as the everyday reality of being human begins to force its way into his routine Vincent is forced to confront questions that go far beyond his training.
I really look forward to hearing from you and reading your works as well.

Chris here. I live in the Seattle area. I've loved sci-fi and fantasy all my life. I love both, but I'd have to say fantasy is probably my true love.
I hope to even spin a few yarns of my own, perhaps. Though, writing I may be better suited toward sci-fi, but who knows. :)

(Whoops, still going backwards in time, but I think I fixed it now.)
I'm building a time machine so that someone can go back and do the laundry. Any takers?
Nice to meet all of you fellow time travelers (travellers, for the British among you :-).
Hope to see you previously,
Deb
Crossing In Time: The 1st Disaster

I'm an American who has trained my Word to use travellers as the default. Then I have to go back in and change them all in editing, lest my fellow Americans think I can't spell. I do the same with gray. I much prefer the look of grey. But no added U's here. I still calculate in inches and feet, after all.
Oh, and BTW, I think I introduced myself before, but it'll be in the 2014 folder. I joined in December. I haven't been too active. Here and there at the most, so now is one of those times.
Okay, I'm off to resume lurking :)

If so, maybe you want to win a book by explaining Cricket to all us 'Muricans? The thread's on this month's TT giveaway...

The only thing I know about cricket is what any American would, that it's similar to baseball but with wider bats ;)

Welcome, @Robin! I'm a Willis fan too. Bellwether is one of my favorite books :-) I haven't read anything by Jodi Taylor. Does she write sci-fi time travel? Can you recommend one of her books?

Now you know why I avoid loose rocks.

Welcome, Fred!
Are you living in Costa Rica? (I added your book to my to-read shelf and saw your other book on CR.) If so, in what area?

LOL.
Are you a writer James? (You have a very writerly name, and those sunglasses are definitely cool ;-)

Yes, every teacher and every librarian I ever met, as a child, wanted to be the first to tell me that I had a famous name. They all seemed to assume they were the first to tell me.
Plus, no teacher or librarian every forgot me, for the same reason. Not always a good thing, for a precocious boy.
And yes, I'm a writer. No, nothing published. I'm working on it, though.

We just moved back for health reasons. I have PD and although CR health care is good to excellent, for things like PD there is not much research. The book still covers a lot of useful information with prices being the major changes. But as we live in the Dallas area longer we are finding the grocery bill is about the same. I am trying to find time to update the book and have the updated version available as a free up grade. But these fiction books take a ton of time. I would go ahead and get it. I still sells a dozen or so copies each month and the comments do not reflect dissatisfaction. WE were living in the Puriscal area and loved it there.
Fred

Something to do with time travel?? Where are you in the writing process?

Fred

What should you say? You might tell us where you're from, what you do, something interesting about yourself, what you like to read, what your hobbies and interests are, why you like time travel, and/or where/when you'd go if you were able to time travel.
And then when you've finished here, jump into a conversation with us elsewhere in the group.
