This book is a sequel to The Forest of Allund.
Alexio Sopholus has had it with his leaders and the Brotherhood of Mages. He now lives in his new home with his wife and his animal friends. Once again that peace is shattered by the barbarian Zilar and an attempt on his life. After a brilliant military move by the Zilar, Alexio and his wife are forced to travel to another kingdom to seek aid in combating their foes. What he finds instead is even a more insidious plot against him and all mages. Alexio and companions must flee for their lives to bring word of this plot back home. With his kingdom and Brotherhood in tatters, Alexio must find some way to rejoin the cooperation of the mages and his leaders while stopping the conquest and enslavement of his home and to all those he cares about.
