Pop Sugar's Annual Ultimate Reading Challenge discussion

I have a question about the 'trilogies' entry on the PopSugar list. I'm currently midway through multiple trilogies - would you say that as long as the last book is read in 2015 it counts, or should we use a new trilogy?

hmm. for that, i thought that i could read a new series that is complete (Nameless [Tales of Beauty & Madness, #1] is on my TR and matched those standards) just because it felt more fun/fresh that way.

i'd say start a new series, just one that's not too long and easy to get a hold of :) but idk what everybody else is doing.

Considering it's a sneaky way to get a book a week (52) out of a 50-item list, I'm betting the intent was to read a whole trilogy. You might also interpret it as the first in a planned trilogy, if you choose a new release.

At the end of the day, have fun, read books, right? :)

There's also nothing on there that says no re-reads, is there? I know a lot of people who like to read/skim the first two again right before the last book comes out.

That's true - 52 is a nice number for a year-long reading list.

I'm fine with reading more - just means I should find a new series! :)

Could I count a series with more than three books as a trilogy if I read three of them? I'm working my way through the Outlander series (there's 8, I think). I mean, I could probably count each as something else on the list individually, but as I don't usually read trilogies/series, I was hoping I could "cheat" a bit.

hahahaha, I think there is something nice about the form of the trilogy or starting and ending a story in three books but if you get to the end of the year and want to count a 3+ book series as a trilogy, IDK would you have to finish it?

We can also definitely recommend trilogies to you, I see how the kind of books you usually read aren't trilogies though!

I need some ideas for trilogies. I've already read Hunger Games, Divergent, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

AHH!!! Rebecca, you too might enjoy the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. Beautiful beautiful writing really amazing themes. So much intensity in parts that it's seared on my brain.

A trilogy which can also tick Pulitzer Prize is Gilead, Home and Lila by Marilyn Robinson. A really engaging group of characters. She is a great writer. Won the Pulitzer with Housekeeping also.

I have no problem with this. Call it a "Trilogy Plus" Really, there are no PopSugar Police and I think the whole point of the challenge is to get us out of our comfort zones and try new genres out. Do whatever the heck you want.

Do it. Besides, many a planned trilogy wound up being a full blown "series" by the time the author finished. If they can cheat, so can we.

the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness is wonderful. much better than Hunger Games- more complexity

ok I may not have looked back far enough, so this question may have already been asked but is it ok if the Trilogy is really like four books ? I just started Cinder thinking it was a trilogy but its a four book series and I can start a different series ( I work at a library so it wont be hard to ind one ) but I KNOW I'm going to read the rest of them so I thought I would as :).

We've talked about this a few times and have kind of decided it's up to you as long as you read the full series. I'm a purist and will be reading a trilogy but I also read a lot more trilogies than many people. In general though in this group we're all for small modifications to make things more do-able so if this modification works for you, go for it.

Planning to re-read "Earthsea" trilogy by Ursula K. Le Guin (been so long since I read--IF I read it all--that most is forgotten). First time around, it was only WIZARD OF EARTHSEA, TOMBS OF ATUAN and FARTHEST SHORE. Looking it up now, it's called "Earthsea Cycle", as a couple other books were added 20 or 30 years later...But most are shortish, so may read quickly--and could also count in categories "by woman writer" and "non-human characters" (talking dragon, at least so far), or "made into movie".

Tho maybe not billed as trilogy, three books by Edward Eager share same characters: HALF MAGIC, MAGIC BY THE LAKE and KNIGHT'S CASTLE. Can also count as "funny", "has magic". (Might be stretch to count as "play" tho author was playwright, which shows in comic dialogue that adults relish; KNIGHTS CASTLE latter is about re-working of a movie version of book IVANHOE by Sir Walter Scott which includes a classic romance-sorta.)

What is it with fantasies and trilogies? (maybe related to classic granting of "Three Wishes"?): another triplet is by one of Eager's favorite writer's E. (Edith) Nesbit: FIVE CHILDREN & IT, PHOENIX AND THE CARPET and STORY OF THE AMULET (check off "non-human", "has magic", "by woman writer" (who was friend of H.G. Wells BTW), "funny", or "over 100 years old".

Louisa May Alcott's trio LITTLE WOMEN, LITTLE MEN and JO'S BOYS is also about same family "over 100 years old", maybe also "from your childhood", "one your mother loved", "first book by famous author", "made you cry" (when Beth dies)"made into movie", "book by favorite author you haven't read"--tho somewhere moderator may've said check off only 3 categories per book read.

I took a risk and read the first two books in the Wolf Hall trilogy. It's a risk cause the last book hasn't been released yet, but it's *suppose* to come out this year. If not, I'll have to find something else and use those books to fulfill other requirements.

Hey Desertisland thanks for the great suggestions. If you wouldn't mind could you put the Little Women spoiler behind a spoiler tag? Just in case anyone reading this thread doesn't yet know that (view spoiler)[Beth dies (hide spoiler)]. I know it's unlikely but I like to be cautious.

I am actually in the middle of The Two Towers, after finished Fellowship in January, but it's definitely not a quick read. Since I have heard so much good things about daughter of smoke and bone I may check that out and see which trilogy I finish first. I'm sure the other books can be applied to other things if not used under the trilogy category ;)

I will, but it isn't out yet. That seems to always happen, there's a 4th. And so, I wait for it! Time to mark off another as complete! Yea!
