Just finished this, and I think reading this book aloud, in the dark, with just a campfire for light, would be perfect for what the book is trying to accomplish.

Audrey (Warped Shelves) (warpedshelves) | 12 comments I chose Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I wanted a shorter novel/anthology because I imagine literally reading this beside a campfire. I don't picture myself sitting beside a fire for 6+ hours to read a whole book lol

Alison | 35 comments I just downloaded Home Before Dark so my husband and I can read it together...I get scared reading horror books but am somehow weirdly drawn to them for summer reading :0

Heather L (wordtrix) | 780 comments For those who’d like a short story (and who may not care for the horror genre), I recommend two I read last week:

* The Watcher by Sheridan le Fanu
* The Werewolf by Clemence Housman

The versions I read were each around 34 pages, something easy to read in one sitting. Both have just the right amount of creepiness, but no gore, and while I liked both, I especially liked the second. Both are available at https://www.gutenberg.org/ .

Marie (marie123) | 39 comments I am not a big horror fan, so if you're like me, here are a few options:

Stolen by Vivian Vande Velde
Being Dead by Vivian Vande Velde
Both of these are labeled as YA, but if I remember correctly, they read younger. They're both relatively low page count and are fast reads.

I also can strongly recommend Seanan McGuire's ghost stories. Big suicide trigger warning for Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day, but it is handled respectfully in my opinion.
Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire
Sparrow Hill Road Seanan McGuire

Diana (candystripelegs) | 246 comments Anyone looking for more family-friendly type of ghost stories to tell around a campfire might consider any of the old Goosebumps books. They're light enough to not scare the kids, but most still carry just enough of a spook-factor that they would fit the prompt.

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 160 comments I don’t do scary at all. I chose Conviction bc it is labeled as a thriller but I am not getting any goosebumpy feelings at all. Bummer.
