The New Jim Crow
question
Tips on how to digest this book?

There's so many things that this book brings up, I want to do more research on everything but at the same time, I want to read the book as fast as I can. For me personally, despite being a person of color, my political views were leaning right, until I grew as a person and realized that the talking points of the right had nothing of substance, and the only way I as a black man could hold such views is due to the fact I grew up in a pretty nice almost all-white neighborhood and wasn't exposed to the real injustices the majority of people of color experience in America. Now I am trying to better educate myself.

I would advise against reading the book as fast as you can since there is a lot of information you would forget.
What helps me with Non-Fiction books, in general, is reading actively. Which is pretty much just taking notes of stuff that I learned and highlighting important information. What also would help is writing out what you learned from the chapter or section.

I agree with you comment. This is not a book that should be read as a narrative but for the historical content. I took my time and read this book during the summer and did as you said highlighted and marked pages with post sticks. I often refer back to this book when teaching.
I keep going back to this book. It has opened my eyes to the great injustices brought about by white supremacy. It has been an important book for me to read one chapter at a time. Then put it aside for a while.
