Brinley Lucy and I will be discussing Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater on this thread starting August 3rd!

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) hey! have you started this book? i don't think i have time today to start it :/ but i'll for sure start it tomorrow

Brinley That's great! I haven't actually picked it up from the library yet, so I was probably going to end up starting it tomorrow too

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) so how do we do this? how many chapter should we read before we start chatting? this book has 79 chapter in total.

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) and i actually made a little bit of time and ended up starting it today. i read 50 pages. not sure if i'll read more tonight tho

Brinley It's up to you, I'm reading like three books at once right now, so a slower pace would be better for me

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) we could maybe read half the book discuss and then read the rest and discuss?

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) like read the first 40 chapters, then read the rest of the chapters

Brinley Ok, that works for me!

Brinley Ok, so how far have you read? I'm starting now

Brinley I'm only up to Page 39, and I'm really struggling to get into this. I'll give it another go tomorrow though

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) yeah, i struggled with the first 70 pages too, but now i am somwhere around page 170 and it got better

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i think i may finish the first 40 chapters today.

Brinley Ok, I'll try and catch up

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) don't rush yourself. i am also reading some other books at the moment soo...

also i am confused as hell. do you have this problem with the book too?

Brinley Yah, you're definitely farther than I am, but names and powers are getting thrown around like crazy. I know there's been references to the Raven Cycle, have you read it? That might be where some of our confusion is coming from

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i've read the raven cycle last year and i still am confused. i thought i knew how the world worked and stuff like that, but i guess that wasn't enough. i find ronan's chapters the least confusing since there are some things i knew about him from the raven cycle. his chapters are still confusing but not as much as the other characters'

Brinley That doesn't bode well, hopefully this clears up soon then

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i finished the first 40 chapters. tell me when you finish too so we can discuss :)

Brinley Ok, im just about done with the first forty chapters. Sorry it's so late, I struggled a bit to get into this

Brinley Like you, I like Ronan's chapters best. I actually understand what's going on in them, and his storyline makes the most sense to me. I don't care much about the Jordan/Hennessy mess, but I do want to know why she has to bring back a new copy if herself every time she dreams. I wonder if she has to dream less often than Ronan, because she has only made six copies in her whole life. Carmen is by far my least favorite character. Her chapters are the most confusing, and the least entertaining to me. I do kinda like Parsifal though.

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) ronan's chapters still remain the best and least confusing for me. like you said, his storyline makes sense! i actually really like jordan/hennessy. i am not sure yet but i may like her character more than ronan's. i really want to know more about her and the copies. i think i like jordan more than hennessy. also i ship jordan with declan. while i was reading the raven cycle i did not care for declan at all, but in this book i actually started to like him. carmen is my least character too. i don't like parsifal, he annoys me too much lol.

have you finished the first 40 chapters? cause there are some things i wanna talk about but are i can't if you have not finished those chapters

Brinley As soon as Ronan's description was announced in the prologue, I knew I would like him. I also like Jordan better than Hennessy, and I kind of ship them together. It's just kind of wierd because as of now she's using him. Declans ok. he's just a bit too good at pulling the boring act. I would like to know what that key is that he was calling about.

And yah, I finished the first forty

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) even tho i started liking declan i don't really trust him since he is a very good liar and he even said himself that.

oh yeah totally forgot about the key. i am curious about that too.

also i am curious about that red head. when we first so her in tha parking lot, hwtaever it was, she was described as a woman, but then after that accident when Shawna? (i think that was her name) is killed she is described as a teen. and at that bookstore when that author says she will drive her somewhere she refuses saying that she doesn't want to hurt him. what the hell is that supposed to mean?

and who the hell is bryde? is he the bad guy in the story or is he actually somewhat good

Brinley Those are good questions. I didn't really think about the woman and teen descriptions, I just figured they were the same person. And that whole thing with the author was wierd. We don't yet know why she wanted to sleep there

I'm not sure about Bryde. Because he did save Ronan, but then again, everyone at the fairy market was talking about him. Clearly he stands to gain something, especially now that he exposed himself to the hunters. Could he be working to bring around the end of the world?

Brinley And then there's the stuff with the images of Ronan's father and mother driving around. What's up with that? They have to be actually dead, right? All of their dream objects fell asleep. Is Bryde using them to get Ronan involved?

And then there's the stuff with the painting, and Hennessey's different dreaming thing (bringing copies of herself out) And then why did Declan cut the back of the painting off? What was he looking for?

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i have a theory that the woman/teen may be something like the stepmother from snow white and the huntsman (i don't know if you've seen this movie or if this happens in the original snow white movie but whatever) where she takes the youth from somebody else and she becomes young again if that makes sense

Brinley Ooooooh ok, thats a great theory. Maybe she can't control herself that well? Hence her not wanting to hurt the guy if he drove her anywhere. I'm not sure how that would tie into the story, but I guess we'll see

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i really don't know about ronan's parents. his mother died during the raven cycle so we actually have proof she died. but ronan's father we are only told he died, he died before the raven boys, murdered to be more exact. i really don't know what to think about it. maybe bryde is palying with his mind. or maybe it's a dream, what ronan saw.

i wonder what hennessy's dream is. because she says that she always brings copies of herself, but she really never brought anything else from a dream?

maybe their father hid something in the paiting. the key or something. but hwta exactly is that key your guess is only as good as mine

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) bryde could be the one bringing the end of the world. and maybe he is using ronan do to so... hopefulky we learn more about him until the end if the book

Brinley Ok, I would guess that Bryde is playing with his mind, he gives me puppet master vibes for some reason. And considering how well known he is, it makes sense that he'd have people capable of that type of stuff in his staff.

Yah, Hennessey's dreams are wierd. I'm guessing that she has to dream less that Ronan but I don't know. She's hearing up for a dream soon though, so I guess we'll figure out

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) also hennessy has that nighwash problem thingy too

Brinley I've started the next forty chapters btw

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i think i'll start them today. i first need to see if i have time

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) ok, so i said that i'm going to start them today, but i ended up finishing the book. where are you at in the book?

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) i didn't think that i was going to finish it today since i wanted to read and finish another book. but i actually ended up finishing both books :)

Brinley Ok, I finished it too

Brinley I was a little disappointed by the lack of closure, but I did like it. We got our answer to who the redheaded lady was, and why people around her ended up dead. It's weird that the copies of his parents are wandering around and involved in the Boudicca stuff. I still want to know who Bryce is and what he's working for, because he saved both Ronan's family and Hennessey, so clearly he's plotting something. Ronan and Jordan are still my favorite characters

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) ronan and jordan are my favorite characters too. i really like declan too.

i wasn't really disappointed with the lack of closure since this is a trilogy and there will be more books. this book just happened to end on a very big cliffhanger.

i'm not sure if it's copies, plural, of their parents or if it's just their father. i am a little confused about the lady in that paiting who is she suppossed to be and why declan said that it's not aurora and that it's actually his mother because from what we know from the raven boys, aurora should be his mother! also i didn't really understand that boudicca stuff.

bryde is a character that i don't really fully trust. there is so little that we actually know about him.

also i'm curious if carmen will be through out this series with the moderators and killing dreamers or if she will come round and maybe join ronan's side. (if that makes sense)

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) (i am not sure if all i said made sense, but i am a little bit, maybe a little bit more sleep deprived so i am blaming it on that)

Brinley I'm guessing that Carmen will end up joining their side. We already know that she doesn't agree with the methods of the Moderators, and that she had ties to a dreamer. I don't think she would have been includes if she wasn't going to have a change of heart

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) in the end i starting feeling so bad for matthew when he found out he was a dream :/

and even tho i parsifal really annoyed me, i still felt bad about his death. i really don't like how their visions end up killing them.

also i am really confused about how visionaries work. i am not sure i really understood that in this book

Brinley Lucy Tonks wrote: "in the end i starting feeling so bad for matthew when he found out he was a dream :/

Yah, I felt pretty bad for Mathew too. Especially because we see Hennesseys copies living and being happy despite being dreams because they were told.

I felt bad for him too. His death was so gruesome, and his life just kinda sucked in general.

I'm prettty sure the visionaries fluctuate in age who they're seeing the visions? And then if they don't know how to control the visions, they end up killing the people nearby I guess

Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader) yeah idk. it took me a really long time until i understood how dreamers (i think i didn't understand until the last book in the raven cycle) work so it may take me a while to understand how visionaries work too
