Alright bookclubbers! School is back in session. Thorn by Intisar Khanani was the winner of the poll. Personally I'm really excited for this one. Comment on this thread when you've finished Thorn!

Can't wait to hear from y'all :)

Hey hey hey!! I finally finished Thorn, so I thought I'd go ahead and kick off the discussion. Spoilers ahead, so if you haven't finished yet, stop reading my post (yes Katie, even you).

I loved this book! I've been in a bit of a reading funk lately, but this book helped tear me out of that. Honestly now I can't wait to pick up another book and start reading. Thank the book lords for fairytale retellings. My Libby app will be so proud.

I loved how strong Alyrra, or Thorn, grew by the end of the book. Her realizing she had a responsibility to her people and finally deciding to do something to save Kestrin from The Lady. I was a little put off in the beginning when she seemed too timid, but I really liked her by the end.

Did not see it coming that Kestrin was the Wind all along, but I really liked that. It explained why he chose her to be his wife. Their relationship was complicated, but it wasn't rushed and I loved how it grew by the end. I truly believe that they will fall in love one day.

And I HATED how Filadon died. Also we never got an explanation over how his head could sort of speak?? Also how it didn't rot?

Also loved how Thorn's dream life was living in a small house, surrounded by friends and animals. Working with gooses and horses. Honestly girl, same. Her just settling into her life and being like wait I love this. That's amazing. She honestly would have been happy there if Valka and the people from the castle had left her alone.

I wish her brother got what was coming to him. Maybe in the next book? When I bought this book I was under the impression it was a stand-alone. Now I can't wait for the sequel. I wonder if the lady will be returning for that story as well. It didn't seem like her and Thorn's story was finished. Also the whole Red Hawk thing, I bet we will see more of him and his gang of theives.

What did everyone else think? All thoughts, good and bad are welcome here! This was our first fantasy book for the club and I really hope it's not the last. And I know I'll be reading more of Intisar Khanani's books in the future.

Can't wait to read y'all's thoughts!

Amy Morris | 1 comments Yeah ok. I liked the story, but I felt things just kinda happened here and there. And yes I agree many unanswered questions. I have The Bone Knife so maybe that will help? Also I really liked the strong woman aspects and the little nods to Islam! I thought that was cool!

message 4: by Baylee (new)

Baylee Wallace | 15 comments all right ladies it is one a.m. and i have to be up for work in a few hours but lets do this thing!!!

It took me a while to get into this book. The beginning (more like the first half) was really hard for me to get into. I thought it was really slow and was dragging on. But once Thorn and Kestrin starting talking more it got a lot more interesting. I unfortunately read HJ's post and saw that the Wind was Kestrin but I am kinda glad I knew because it made the interactions with the Wind so sweet. :)

Did anyone else get the vibe that she was being shamed by her family for being.... loyal? what was that all about? or maybe i just didn't understand what i was reading? idk. Also, their names for royalty were kinda confusing because it was very similar to Valka's name so sometimes in the beginning I thought they were just saying different variations of her name but also I am dumb so maybe thats just me lol.

I agree that at times the writing felt kinda lazy like i just didn't understand why things were happening and what they meant. And I don't mean that in a thrilling what will happen, suspenseful way but more in like a this is bad writing way.

Over all though, I really did enjoy this book mainly because in my head Kestrin was really hot so I really wanted to see what would happen in the end. Hopefully, the next book will have some answers. I will probably read it when it comes out. (its not out yet is it?)

On a final note, Valka was a really dumb bitch who deserved everything in the end.

P.S. I just read over what i typed and i sound really vapid and shallow lol i promise i did enjoy reading it, especially once the story picked up.
