How to simultaneously date a book, while knowing folk in a hundred years just will not get this joke for what it refers to.

I’m now wondering how many pop culture references are in the classics that I will never understand- did Austen do this? Is there hidden meaning in her character’s words? Probably!

When he goes to the docks to ‘win the next battle’, I had images of Ender’s Game, and the first fight to stop the bullies.

I take it that fight happens in the first 10 pages of Ender's Game, then? ;)
