Barbara | 349 comments There is a thread about who you imagine as Sherlock Holmes when you read the stories. But if someone did a new Sherlock Holmes series today - not a modern one like Sherlock or Elementary, but an accurate period one like the Jeremy Brett series - who would be your pick to play Sherlock? Watson? Mrs. Hudson?

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments For the past week, we've been watching the most recent season of "The Crown", and there was something in the performance of Josh O'Connor, who plays the adult Prince Charles, that suggests he might be able to pull off a Holmes.

Barbara | 349 comments Another possibility - was re-watching the series "Victoria." I can see either Laurence Fox, who plays Lord Palmerston, or maybe even Tom Hughes who plays Prince Albert as a possible Holmes.

Tara | 10 comments Laurence Fox is a solid choice for Holmes. I think Cary Elwes would make an excellent Watson.

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments I "third" Laurence Fox. Great pick! And there's a family-Sherlock link. His father and uncle, James Fox and Edward Fox, both appeared in Holmes films. James was in one of the Robert Downey Sherlock Holmes films, and I think Edward was in some old made-for-TV film about Dr. Watson.

I saw that one not long ago. I liked the casting of John Huston as Moriarty, and thought Charlotte Rampling was a beautiful Irene.

They reran some episodes of "Victoria" over the weekend, and really go back to Laurence Fox as the next Sherlock. Great voice. I am still reading some of the new Sherlock stories in the MX Books and think if they ever do another series with new cases, they need to use some of these stories - some are really good - and cast Laurence Fox. Now, I just have to think of who could play Watson.

Barbara | 349 comments Just today I read that Laurence Fox wants to run for mayor of London!

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments I am going to nominate three more:
1. James d'Arcy - Years ago, he starred in a television film that was called "A Case of Murder" (I think) though in other markets it was called "Sherlock." He played a very young, more romanticized Sherlock Holmes. His performance was better than the film.
2. Robert Pattinson - Since his "Twilight" fame, he delivered some very solid performances in smaller films like "The Lighthouse", "High Time" and "Good Time." and in "The King."
3. My out-of-the-box choice: Mahershala Ali - I've seen him in several films, recently we watched "Green Book" again, and I just saw something in his performance that suggested he could pull off a very persuasive Holmes.

Barbara | 349 comments What about Tom Hiddleston?

message 16: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 349 comments Okay...... the article says that Eddie Izzard will be the next Holmes in a "big budget drama series."

message 17: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments I'm not seeing Izzard, for the same reason I never got into the Robert Downey one - good actors, but they don't bear the physical resemblance to Holmes that I think - especially in the wake of Rathbone and Brett - is essential.
Having said that, Izzard was wonderful as Charlie Chaplin in a lesser-known but fine little film called "The Cat's Meow." It's a fictionalized take on the mysterious death of early filmmaker Thomas Ince.

message 18: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 349 comments I checked it out and Izzard was really good. Never heard of the movie before. Interesting because another actor who played Sherlock Holmes - Robert Downey, Jr - also starred as Chaplin in that biopic. And the real Chaplin, when he was around 14, played Billy, the page in a stage production of "Sherlock Holmes."

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments Bringing back this subject because apparently there has been some difficulty getting a fifth season of the TV program "Sherlock" off the ground. In an interview with Steven Moffet, the showrunner/writer and his wife who is a producer, his wife said that the role could be recast, though apparently Moffet wasn't as certain. But if they do, this thread has a list of possibilities ready.

message 20: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 349 comments So - I heard that Guy Ritchie optioned the young Sherlock Holmes books by Andrew Lane. I read some, thought they were good MG/YA historical adventures, though I was never quite convinced this was a teen Holmes.
But - assuming they get it up and running - who would be a good choice for a mid-teens Sherlock Holmes?

message 21: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (r1versong) | 2 comments David Tennant?

message 22: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments Young Sherlock Holmes? Tough because you need a teen who is the right height and has the right "look" - does Timothy Chalomee (sp?) have a younger brother.
