Chelsea Ajunwa Just wondering because I dislike him. I can't really explain why, though.

Breanna I don't like him at all either. We're in the minority though.

Caitlin Robinson You are crazy. He's bad-ass, compassionate. Everything he should be. I wouldn't be surprised if Sarah Maas put those two together.

Meghan ✨ If Rowan and Aelin don't end up together I'm going to put my hand in a blender and put it on high... that would be better then not having be together!

PinkPepper NO! I love Rowan. He is like awesome!

Emma Taylor Meghan wrote: "If Rowan and Aelin don't end up together I'm going to put my hand in a blender and put it on high... that would be better then not having be together!"

Hahaha yes Rowan is awesome!!

Raroshnaw I don't dislike him , hes amazing as he is but..... i wont like to see him pairing with celaena, at all, chaol and her, yes, they prove to be one made for each other and rowan, well hes life mate die, well sorry for it but , get out of the way buddy, soul mate as magic partner i do can understand but in love, no way, chaol is the perfect one, if celaena and rowan get together them i can assure i wont buy the book at all, no way

Chloe ok at first I hated Rowan cause he was being such a meanie to Celaena so I was yelling at my book like "don't you dare touch that girl." But later on I kinda warmed up to him and now I think he and Aelin/Celaena are the cutest friends on the planet. <3

Meghan ✨ I believe that Rowan and Celaena are perfect for each other! Rowan and Celaena have both experienced terrible loss in their lives. Rowan is the last push she needed to fully accept herself and go kick the kings ass and become Terresen's rightful Queen! Rowan, right from the beginning was pushing for Celaena to finally see herself. She has so much hate for herself and I think Rowan helps her forget all that at times. He gives her the honest truth (blunt bastard) but she really learns from it. In CoM, Chaol had lied to her which led to her best friend being killed and that fucking destroyed her! Not once in HoF do I remember Rowan lying to her. I love Chaol as a character and appreciate what he has done for Celaena but he needs to step aside and let Rowan through cuz honey he is fine (I've seen some sexy fanart of him.... hot damn!) I just feel like Celaena/ Aelin could really continue to grow through Rowan. That's all I want!

J.S. Young It's not that I didn't like Rowan, I just don't see why people love him so much. He was okay I guess nothing really was that endearing that he did in my eyes, at least not enough to forget about his idiotic treatment of Celaena at the beginning. I felt it was nice to see Celaena have a relationship that wasn't particularly romantic and I then I saw things on Tumblr and Instagram about people shipping them. At this point I was just like what?

Raroshnaw I just don't get why people automatically want to make celaena pair with Rowan, and on this I have to agreed with Jonathan, Rowan attitude is totally rude, even if is her training or whatsoever, she still a girl,a female, and most of it he knows already she is an equal,a princess, a queen to be...
those two as friends I can trully get it,awesome, he can be he's right hand, magic power soulmate, but as a life partner,no way,on the other hand She and Chaol ,totally awesome,I lke that connection there

Sarvy So happy someone has admit this!! He doesn't have much personality (no---being brooding and super hot doesn't cut it for me). At times during the training it almost felt like he was being physically/emotionally abusive. I don't perceive that rough treatment of a woman as "masculine" like some women do. Aelin would do very well as queen on her own!

Arbré Écorce Rowan was made for a single purpose as such he is a flat character. He was given loveable attributes but what you see is that he doesn't have depth or relatable traits.

Zahwa i don't like him as her lover i don't think they fit each other but maybe as a friend as a member of her court? i don't also feel like he's special enough to be with her.

Polly I hate Rowan so much! i think if the author didn't try so hard to shove him down our throats about how perfect he is then i wouldn't mind him.

I don't get how people try to justify Celaena breaking up with Chaol and then getting with Rowan by saying stuff like 'Chaol was horrible to her. When in my opinion Rowan was far worse he was abusive to her in HOF and said that she was better off dead. but that doesnt matter because he's fae and hot if Chaol said that people would loose it. and what Chaol did to Celaena in COM i don't get the fuss what he did was understandable and Celaena could not forgive it wtf is wrong with the author she must have some intensive wet dreams about Rowan at night

message 16: by Bambi_slaughter (new)

Bambi_slaughter I'm currently reading Queen of shadows and I was wondering if I was the only one who think that Maas is doing too much to tell us Rowan is so powerful, so perfectly built, so perfect for Celeana. In the 3rd book, I think he was a (bit) abusive towards Celaena. And he's a macho which is not a good thing for me. :P I loved Chaol and Celeana's relationships and I understand what he did.
I think we should make a drinking game for every time the author mentions the powerful presence or perfect body of Rowan or anytimes he's full of rage because Celeana did not listen to him or did something without him knowing it. xD

(I'm sorry if there is any english mistakes, btw)

Sarah.H.L He cannot be disliked...

message 18: by Lauren (last edited Jul 25, 2018 12:42PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lauren Lanz YES and just like you said, I can't explain why. It's just like he emits bad vibes... I don't even really know. DON'T COME AT ME

Paige Rowan is life. I feel as if he has his faults and was definitely not nice to Aelin in the beginning but that was explained away. Which, yes, doesn't make it okay but it makes it more understandable why he acted the way he did. He is no where near perfect but I believe he is perfect for her. It has been said repeatedly that Rowan has never once looked at her with disgust or horror in account of the things she has done. He has let her fight her own battles as no one else truly will. He is definitely stubborn and pig headed but I believe he is the only person out there who will truly challenge Aelin and make her a better person while also letting her simply be who she truly is.

message 20: by Jana (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jana It's not that I dislike him but I went to the series expected to be in love with him , but now I'm like he's alright .

message 21: by Soph (new) - rated it 3 stars

Soph I don't know, he's not my favorite. I feel kind of ehh towards him, but I ship Aelin with herself, so I don't really like him because I feel like he's not as necessary...

Kaila M.Bird wrote: "If Rowan and Aelin don't end up together I'm going to put my hand in a blender and put it on high... that would be better then not having be together!" I will happily do it with you

Sarah A For a bit, I liked Rowan. He was different and actually disliked Aelin at first and was cold to her. I never wanted them to be together. I wish Mass had shown Aelin's ability to be friends with a guy and not develop feelings for him. On top of that Rowan was a bit of the cliche bad-boy-bad-home type and their arc seemed pretty similar to the whole Tris and Tobias love story, so it didn't feel new. I would much rather Aelin have a beefy bantering wingman that she gripes with than exactly what I had expected to happen (based on her pattern of boyfriends in the past).

Maria Honestly I don't understand why everybody likes Rowan. He was okay in "Heir of fire" but nothing special just an other 'strong' white male with a tragic backstory. Also he was just BORING for me.His realtionship with Aelin it's so dysfunctional and he SO possesive and very shallow as a character AGAIN i don't inderstand why everybody seems to like them.

Kim First of all I dont hate Rowan, but I am not very fond of him either, Heir of Fire was such a good book and I liked their relationship in it and yes he was a bit abussive, but I didnt mind it. But that doesn't mean that I want him as a love interest for Aelin. They kinda fit together, but that might be because they both are Fae.

But i really was glad that she broke up with Chaol. He needs a good sweet girl and Aelin was just too wild for him. Which is good, because I love her fire and I kinda disliked Chaol at the end of book 2

message 27: by Nika (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nika Ocvirk Rowan is such an amazing character. Yes at first I disliked him a lot but now he is a completely different person and that is just because Aelin came into his life. I think they are perfect for each other and they complete each other. He always cares about her and she also cares a lot about him. My opinion is that he is my favourite character in the book.

Julian Adorney I honestly dislike him. On one level, I think he's perfect for Aelin because he's the only one strong enough to handle her as an equal instead of bowing before her or being terrified of her. Buuut he still beat the shit out of her and threatened to whip her, and I don't forgive that.

message 29: by Crystal (last edited Oct 13, 2019 06:47PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Crystal I actually like him. The main reason why I like him is because he's able to ACCEPT Aelin for everything she is. He sees the darkness and self loathing and he understands it. He doesn't pity her, because he himself has gone through nearly the same thing. He's able to deeply relate and understand Aelin's conflict.

The second reason is Rowan doesn't fear Aelin's power and he doesn't fear the fact that she is fae. When Aelin was with Chaol, he always seemed so horrified whenever Aelin did something fae-like or showed her true power. Chaol was holding her back, Rowan wants Aelin to become the most powerful version of herself and he's not afraid to push her.

Julian Adorney Crystal wrote: "I actually like him. The main reason why I like him is because he's able to ACCEPT Aelin for everything she is. He sees the darkness and self loathing and he understands it. He doesn't pity her, be..."

That's an excellent point! When you've gone through hell and seen your life ripped apart, it can be absolutely wonderful to find someone who has gone through the same thing, can empathize, and doesn't pity you :)

Plus, Celaena/Aelin would probably murder anyone who pitied her ;)

message 31: by Jhunter (last edited Oct 31, 2019 02:16AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jhunter I loved Rowan in Heir of Fire. I loved the relationship between him and Aelin, this master and student link. She needed someone who could understand and accept her Fae power. I also liked that Rowan was an ass with her at first, it was a nice change of pace after Chaol and Dorian inconditional love for Aelin.
However, from the moment SJM forced the romance between the both of them, I started to hate all the scenes with him. It felt so weird and unnatural. All the focus on how manly he's, how handsome, strong etc... So cringy.
I wished SJM stopped their relation at how they were at the end of Heir of Fire, The romance just doesn't make sens to me.

I know a lot of people like him more after Heir of Fire, but I found him to be a real let down.

Crystal Jhunter wrote: "I loved Rowan in Heir of Fire. I loved the relationship between him and Aelin, this master and student link. She needed someone who could understand and accept her Fae power. I also liked that Rowa..."

You make a good point! I'm a huge fan of Rowan in Heir of Fire but the romance between him and Aelin is not fleshed out well at all in the later books. They are extremely compatible here and have great chemistry, but the writing didn't manage to capture it in the pages in the other books of the series.

But Rowan/Aelin from Heir of Fire is possibly one of my all time favourite pairings

Teresa Meza I truly loved Rowen and Aelin together yes he challenged her and pushed her good!!!.. Chaol wanted her to be Celena but his version not what she really was a queen destined for greatness he also feared her for being fae and being a lethal killing assassin something she should never be ashamed of being. If it wouldn’t have been Rowen I would have chosen Dorian at least he wanted her to be who she truly was meant to be and he related to her in power as well!

message 34: by Sofia (last edited Nov 15, 2019 01:30PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sofia Sorrentino I genuinely have zero clue why everyone loves him so much. It's not even that I hate him, it's that he's so so boring, and is just a carbon copy of any other brooding, alpha male love interest you could find in any YA book. And I guess he and Aelin/Celaena are cute. Honestly they made little to no impression on me as a couple. But as a character in his own right he fails in my eyes

Book_Lover I ship Rowan and Aelin sooo badlyyyy!

Elsie88 I rly don’t like Rowan

message 37: by Ali (new)

Ali Rowan's kinda boring, if I'm being honest. I feel bad for saying that! But he is 😫 But I figure there's a reason I love Dorian, Chaol and Aedion... Although, I couldn't see Aelin ending up with one of them, as maybe SJM couldn't see either and maybe that was the inspiration behind Rowan, but... Wtf is there to Rowan? A hot, gruff fae male and not the fuck much else 😂 I like character love interests who are amazing on their own and just wildly spectacular together and Rowan falls short with both of those...

message 38: by Elka (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elka like him that's it

Ursula A I don’t exactly dislike him . . . I just don’t like him.

Aritree Sengupta I love him now, after reading the other books. In HOF, I didn't love him, I just liked him. Especially towards the end. But in the other books! Queen of Shadows! Honestly, he has increased my expectations for fantasy heroes forever. I fell for him every moment.

Ruzana Glaeser I agree with others saying he grew on me. I didn't like him in the beginning, but the more I read the more I liked :)

Ruzana Glaeser I didn't particularly like him in this book, he did get on my nerves...but in later books I have completely changed my mind.

message 43: by Mush (new) - rated it 1 star

Mush ya, I'm not a big fan of Rowan since he's not that rememberable, all I remember about him was that he was a big-strong-buff-guy-with-a-tragic-past, and there are a LOT of those types of characters.
And he was kinda mean to Aelin when he's first introduced.
I don't know, I don't really like the Throne of Glass series in general anyway.

Emma Taylor No

message 45: by Manha (last edited Apr 20, 2021 03:43PM) (new) - added it

Manha Ch I don't hate him but I don't really like him either. He's definitely not the worst character but he's just another stereotypical "bad boy". Buff, strong, powerful, with some tragic backstory that's supposed to make me feel sorry for him and justify any bad behaviour. That's all he does. He doesn't have an arc or storyline besides protecting Aelin and letting everyone know how much he loves her every five seconds, whether it's through one of their cringy Wattpad lines or through (constant) sex. He banters with everyone so it doesn't really show us anything except that he's easily irritated. So he's defensive, tempermental, loves Aelin and is powerful. That is literally his entire personality and character arc.

Once Rowan is freed from Maeve he was immediately sworn to Aelin, so he doesn't even get to have his own intentions. He's constantly under someone else. He literally has zero reason to try to restore Terrasen besides the fact that it was Aelin's home. Everyone else pitched in because they hoped to find something. Aedion wanted to restore his family legacy. Lysandra and Evangeline wanted a home. Gavriel did it mainly because of his son but also because he and Fenrys didn't have much of a choice. Lorcan did it for Maeve, revenge on Aelin and eventually to stay with Elide. Elide wanted to be on the right side of history. But Rowan has no motive of his own. Think about it: if Rowan was free of Maeve and never met Aelin, what would he have done? We don't know because he always followed Maeve's orders, and when he didn't have to he dedicated everything to helping Aelin. We have no clue what Rowan would do if he focused on himself. He doesn't have a personality or any hobbies or anything. When people describe Rowan they usually talk about his dedication to Aelin or his good looks or his muscular build, because those are his only significant traits.

No, I don't hate Rowan. But he has no character growth throughout the series so I do see him as kind of pointless.

message 46: by Amelia (new)

Amelia M I don't dislike Rowan but I think he and Aelin are cute friends, they have both been through a lot. I don't ship them tho. I also don't ship Aelin and Chaol would be good together tho because Aelins been through way more than Chaol can imagine. IDK if this changes because I just started CoM.

Crystal Just want to say I only ship Aelin x Rowan in book 4 Heir of Fire.

But I was also disappointed with their dynamics in the later books. Rowan was written weirdly and not fleshed out well in the later books. In Heir of Fire alone though - I loved their relationship

me too honestly, I guess I felt like celaena/ aelin is awsome but reading celaena/ aelin with rowan is for some reason giving me like haymitch katniss vives and I know its crazy but I can't really shack that off.

message 50: by Alex (new)

Alex I guess I wouldn't dislike rowan as a character if he didn't end up with celaena/aelin, I mean like he literaly bullied her for half a book into changing pesonalities and then at somepoint durring the middle he was like your sleeping in my room from now on for no good reason, no big deal, i mean like i get the protective thing but i realy loved that celaena is able to protect herself and she wouldn't even let sam share her soap but she is somehow ok with sharing rooms with a man who has been mean to her since she met him, I just don't see how it fits, also they're cousins why does no one talk about that,
