Janine Ballard (httpwwwdearauthorcom) | 54 comments Hello. I am looking for a book that appeared in my Goodreads timeline sometime in the past six months. I think it’s a recent contemporary romance or maybe a contemporary YA romance, possibly one that has not been published yet. I would guess the publication date falls between 2017 and 2021. The book had an illustrated cover and I vaguely recall that I thought the cover image was cute but I’m less sure of that.

The conflict concerned a couple from different backgrounds and the relatives of the heroine (I think it was the heroine’s relatives but it may have been the hero’s) were opposed to the relationship because her/his partner wasn’t from their community and didn’t share their background. I can’t remember which community it was, I want to say Indian but it may have been another background too.

I was interested in reading the book because this is a situation I have encountered IRL more than once (it happens in my community too), parents putting pressure on their children about what category of people they can date. I loved the movie of The Big Sick so I’m hoping this book will be is similar.

Please note: the book is NOT Ties that Tether by Jane Igharo. I have read that one already and while it has a similar concept this was another book with a different cover and title.

Janine, can you tell us more about the couple's backgrounds/communities and who objected? How old are they? What are their jobs or are they students?

I’m pretty sure it was the parents who objected. They wanted their child to marry someone from their own community. It wouldn’t have mattered what specific background they were from, if it differed from their own.

I *think* one of them was white, probably the guy. But I’m not sure. The other was Indian or Pakistani if I had to guess.

Jobs—I’m pretty sure they were students, maybe graduate or college students.

I also think the cover may have had at least partially blue or green background. But again, I could be wrong on this too.

The book popped up on my timeline but I was already planning ot read Ties that Tether and didn’t want to read two books with the same premise close together. So I didn’t give it more than a cursory look. I’m regretting it now.

ETA: I also edited the headline of this thread. I don’t actually think it was a marriage, I think they were just dating. Apologies for the miscommunication.

Thanks for the update. Add more plot details from your message #1 to the header by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, there's a "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

Many members only read the headers. We have thousands of book requests.

Thanks for updating the header. This will help searchers and moderators.

Janine Ballard (httpwwwdearauthorcom) | 54 comments I am starting to think this was a YA. Is it okay if I change the topic name and description and move it to the YA folder and see if that works?

You can edit your header anytime. I added "YA?". Please note that YA = Teens, in this group. If the main characters are in their 20s, that's Adult (or New Adult). Also, all open requests for one specific book (or book series) are found in the "Unsolved" folder.

Janine Ballard (httpwwwdearauthorcom) | 54 comments Thanks.

Rainbowheart | 28616 comments Janine, did you rule out all the books mentioned in message 9?

Janine Ballard (httpwwwdearauthorcom) | 54 comments No, I missed them! Thanks for pointing them out. I’m 99.9% sure that Counting Down with You was the book I was looking for, so thank you! :-) I just moved it to the solved folder.
