Storytime Challenge
Duration: November 1, 2020-October 31, 2021

Object:
Read a book for one task from each story.

1. Pinocchio
Is a novel for children written by Italian author Carlo Collodi. It is about a mischievous adventures of a wooden marionette named Pinocchio and his father, the poor woodcarver, Geppetto. Pinocchio dreams of being a real boy whose nose grows when he lies.

2. Aladdin
Is one of the best know stories in The Book Of The Thousand Nights And One Night, Volume II by Antoine Galland. It is the story of a young ne'er-do-well who finds a gene in a lamp and falls in love with the Sultan's daughter.

3. Alice In Wonderland
Is an 1865 novel written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It is a story of a young girl who falls down the rabbit hole into a world of peculiar creatures.

4. Bambi
Written by Austrian author Felix Salten, it is a tale of a young deer who meets some friends along the way, is "twitterpated" with a young doe named Faline and becomes the Prince of the Forest.

5. The Ant and The Grasshopper
Is number 373 of Aesop's Fables. It is the story of a grasshopper who spends his time singing while the ant spends his time storing up food for the winter. When winter arrives, the grasshopper begs for food, the ant rebukes the grasshopper's idleness.

6. The Boy Who Cried Wolf
Is another Aesop's Fable. Numbered 210. This is the story of a young boy who repeatedly tricks the townsfolk that wolves are attacking his flock. When a wolf really does appear, no one believes him and his flock gets eaten. In some versions, the boy does too.

7. Cinderella
Is a folk tale about unjust oppression/triumphant reward. A wealthy widower has a beautiful young daughter; a girl of unparalleled kindness and sweet temper. The girl is forced into servitude by her stepmother, where she is made to work day and night doing menial chores. She attends a ball and leaves a glass slipper behind. The prince has become even more infatuated with the mysterious woman and searches for the woman whose foot fit the slipper.

8. Chicken Little or Henny Penny
Is a folk tale of a chicken who believes the world is coming to an end. The phrase "The Sky Is Falling" came from this story and now is a common idiom indicating hysterical or mistaken belief that disaster is imminent.

9. The Frog Prince
Is a fairy tale best known through the Brother's Grimm's written version and is traditionally the first story in their collection. A princess finds a frog and (there are several versions of how) he magically transforms into a handsome prince.

♦️ Read a book whose title contains the letters FROG in any order.
♦️ Read a book that is #1 on any list on GR (tell us what list you used).


10. The Gingerbread Boy
First appeared in 1875 and is a tale of a gingerbread boy who runs away from various pursuers and chants "you can't catch me" throughout the story until he eventually cannot outrun a fox who eats him.

♦️ Read a book that has some repetitive phrase in it - something that a character says over and over again (tell us the phrase).
♦️ Read a book with 18 or 75 intact in the total page number (ex. 185 or 475).
♦️ Read a book with a tricky fox like character.


11. Hansel and Gretel
Is a well known fairy tale recorded by the Brother's Grimm that was published in 1812. Hansel and Gretel are brother & sister who are kidnapped by witch who lives in a house made of cake and confections. The children save themselves by outwitting the witch.

♦️ Read a book with an MC whose name (first or last) begins with H or G.
♦️ Read a book where someone outwits someone else or where someone escapes captivity.


12. Jack And The Beanstalk
Made its first appearance in 1734 and is the story of a young, poor boy who is sent out to sell the family cow, but trades her for magic beans. The mother becomes angry and throws the beans on the ground. Overnight, the beans grow into a giant beanstalk that Jack climbs, finding a giant there.

13. The Princess and The Pea
Is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson and is the story of a princess who must prove her royal identity with a test of her physical sensitivity. It was first published in 1835 with 3 other Anderson tales.

♦️ Read a book with an author who uses three names.
♦️ Read a book from The Princess and the Pea Retellings.


14. The Prince and The Pauper
Is a novel written by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada. It tells the story of two identical boys - one very rich who is the son of the king and the other very poor who lives with his abusive father. The boys meet and trade places.

♦️ Read a book where someone experiences "the other side of life" (rich person experiences being poor or poor person experiences being rich, mermaid experiences having legs or person experiences being a mermaid).

15. Rapunzel
Is a story with many varieties. Basically, a beautiful girl is locked away in a tower where her hair grows long. One day a prince hears her singing and tries to rescue her. She lets her hair down so he can climb it and they plot an escape.

16. Snow White
Is another Brother's Grimm story, numbered 53. It is a story of a young princess and and evil stepmother. The princess is sent to the forest to be killed. The evil stepmother eventually finds out she is still alive when Snow White becomes more fair than the stepmother. She tries to kill Snow White with a poisoned apple, but she only falls into a deep sleep that can be broken only by a kiss.

17. The Emperor's New Clothes
Is a short Danish tale by Hans Christian Andersen in which the Emperor is given a set of clothes that would be invisible to all who were unfit, stupid or incompetent. The Emperor parades in his "new clothes" and everyone is afraid to say they can not see them for fear of being labeled unfit, stupid or incompetent until a small child says "But he's not wearing anything at all!"

18. The Fountain of Youth
Is a Japanese fairy tale collected by Lafcadio Hearn. An old couple lives in the mountains. He cut wood and she weaved, everyday. One day, the man found a spring and drank from it. He ran home to tell his wife who then went to the spring but did not come back. The man went to find her at the spring but he found a baby. The woman drank too eagerly.

19. The Little Mermaid
Is another fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul.

♦️ Read a book with a title whose first letter of every word can be found in HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (3 word minimum) .
♦️ Read a book in which someone wishes dearly that they could be someone else.


20. The Little Red Hen
Is an old folk tale, most likely of Russian origin. The little red hen finds a grain of wheat and asks various farm animals to help her plant it. They all refuse. Then she asks for help with the threshing, milling and baking and they always refuse to help her. When the bread is done, she asks who will help her eat it. All the animals who refused to help earlier all want to help her eat it, but she declines their help since they declined to help her make it.

21. Little Red Riding Hood
Is a European fairy tale that can be traced back to the 10th century. A little girl walks through the woods to take a basket of food to her sickly grandmother. A big bad wolf wants to eat her and the food in her basket. He secretly follows her and eventually gains entry to the grandmothers house where he swallows the grandmother and waits for Little Red Riding Hood dressed as the grandmother.

22. The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Is a legend from the town of Hamelin and dates back to the middle ages. It is a story of a rat catcher who lures the rats away with a magical pipe. When the citizens refuse to pay for his service, he uses his magic pipe to lure the children away as he had the rats.

23. Puss in Boots
Is a European literary fairy tale about a cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low born master.

24. Sleeping Beauty
Is a classic fairy tale which involves a beautiful princess, a sleeping enchantment and a handsome prince. The earliest version of the story is found in the narrative of Perceforest, composed between 1330 and 1344 and first printed in 1528.

Is an old folk tale in which hungry strangers convince townsfolk to each share a bit of their food to make a meal everyone can share.

27. The Three Little Pigs
Is a tale of 3 pigs who build their houses out of different materials. A big bad wolf comes along and blows down the house made of straw and sticks but is unable to destroy the pig's house made of bricks. Printed versions date back to the 1840s but the story is thought to be much older.

28. Thumbelina

29. Tom Thumb
Was published in 1621 and is the first fairy tale printed in English. Tom is no bigger than his father's thumb and has many adventures including being swallowed by a cow, tangling with giants and becoming a favorite of King Arthur.

30. The Tortoise and the Hare
Is number 226 of Aesop's Fables. The basic story is the hare is much faster than the tortoise and often teases the tortoise. The tortoise challenges the hare to race. The hare takes a nap in the middle of the race, sure that he will win. He does not.

Is another Brother's Grimm story, numbered 53. It is a story of a young princess and and evil stepmother. The princess is sent to the forest to be killed. The evil stepmother eventually finds out she is still alive when Snow White becomes more fair than the stepmother. She tries to kill Snow White with a poisoned apple, but she only falls into a deep sleep that can be broken only by a kiss.
