The Selection
question
Who's better? Aspen or Maxon?

I personally like Maxon a lot more, because Aspen got in the way of things between them. I wanted to chuck the book across the room.

Don't get me wrong, I love both, but I feel like Maxon was just so much better for her, bc she has so much spirit and he is more chill, but I also love Aspen, just not as like the all time match for her
Maxon is the obvious answer. I'm sorry he's sweet and had so much patience with America that's all that need to be said.
This is obviously in the minority opinion, but I liked Aspen way more. Something about Maxon just irritated me. It's just one of the unexplainable things. Yeah he's nice and sweet and would make a great king undoubtedly. It's just that I think American will get bored of him.... he's kind of boring.
Definitely Maxon, I like Aspen but he threw her away and disregarded her because he was embarrassed? That is a real insecurity but it was love. Then he shows up at the palace and is all like "I MISS U AMERICA WHAAA" like hmm okay?
I'm sorry but it's Aspen. Don't get me wrong, Maxon is kind and patient and understands America, but Aspen is just special. He's so sweet, so charming, and he'd do anything just to make America happy, even if that means losing her. He loved her endlessly even though she broke his heart. Aspen truly knows and understands America. Maxon is kind TO A POINT. He's the Prince, so he can be very cocky and have a "I'm the Prince I say what goes" behavior. Aspen and America already had wedding plans, already had the names for their children! And let's face it. Yes, America and Maxon love each other and Maxon can be very very kind and generous, but America trusts Aspen more. Aspen is the one person America felt she could always trust and she would always be safe with. She sometimes felt intimidated with Maxon, like she couldn't trust Maxon blindly, whereas she could for Aspen. Maxon loves America IF she's a "good wife", IF she acts calm for the public, IF she's a good queen, IF she agrees with him and obeys. Aspen loves America just as she is, unconditionally and wholeheartedly. He knows and loves every aspect of her, embraces her flaws, and never tries to change her.
Okay, so I feel this is a split decision between the people but I believe it's Maxon. From the point Maxon started to show his true self, he was an OBVIOUS better choice than Aspen. Aspen at the start of the series loved America unconditionally, but broke up with her when she tried to return that love. Maxon never gave up on America, even when they had their fights together, it never ended up like Aspen, and soon after Aspen broke up with her he realized his mistake and somehow started loving her again. That's kinda messed up. That's just my opinion tho- #TEAMMAXON
Honestly both characters frustrated me in the series at points, but Maxon was way better than Aspen. Aspen kept getting in the way when America needed space and time to move on. He should have left her alone the moment he saw her at the palace. Maxon was so sweet and truly cared about America. My favorite part of the whole series is still when he gets shot and tells her his heart was only ever hers to break. I cried at that point. So yes definitely Maxon over Aspen any day. Honestly I secretly hoped Aspen would die during one of the rebel attacks.
MAXON see I respect everyone's opinions right.. but aspen should go down the garbage disposal!! :))))))) He made issues with Maxon and America just for the memes when he literally told America to go be with Maxon like CMON
Maxon! Do i need an explanation? i will anyways. aspen was (and i don’t know if anyone caught this) a little sexist. he broke up with America because she brought him food, and he then told her he was supposed to be the one providing for her. and maxon is just super sweet and amazing
Maxon of course! America went into the game with no interest in Maxon and her heart full for Aspen. I personally think that any guy that can change a girls heart like that is the superior option. Aspen is sweet and cares about America, but so does Maxon!
honestly, both were good choices, but i truly feel Maxon was meant to be for America. He was an opposite and in a good way, he was the center of her storm (marlees words lmao). But, she would have been happy with Aspen, but with Maxon she managed to make everyone around her happy and learned new feelings.
Team Maxon of course! I think this quote says enough, "Break my heart. Break it a thousant times if you like. It was ever yours to break anyway." How could you not choose him?
Aspen said he wanted America to try out the selection b/c he wanted better for her, and Maxon is better! Aspen is just there. Maxon is actually funny and sweet even though America is constantly pushing him aside. I feel like the first trilogy in the selection series is kind of dragged out with it mostly being about America being indescive.
Maxon all the way! He treats her so well! Aspen trys really hard, but he is in the army now so he wouldn't really be able to help care for a family. Al the way for Maxon!!!
I honestly don't hate either, that one scene with Celeste REALLY threw me off the team Maxon horse, and Aspen didn't really do anything wrong, he was really played by America because he thought she loved him she treated him unfairly
At the beginning I was #teamaspen but after he came to the castle, idk I just lost the love I had for him. Now I am 100% #teammaxon, like is this even a competition?
I thought I would like Aspen better when I first started the book, but as time went on I realized that Maxon was the better choice. Maxon would've done whatever he could for America, and to be honest America took it for granted.
maxon aunque a veces me hacia dudar, siento que aspen estaba desesperado y si amas a alguien enserio no te importa nada exterior a vuestra relación ni los comentarios de los otros nada
I love both characters, but honestly, I prefer aspen. I have been looking through the rest of the replies and everyone has talked about how Maxon is better for America even though the question is about who is better overall. I agree, Maxon is perfect for America because of how he deals with her personality so well without becoming frustrated with her. however, Aspen and America have so so much chemistry and they were both so in love. They always had so much tension between them and I loved that. Maxon on the other hand is just so loveable and perfect for America.
Personally, I'm on Team Aspen. He knows America a lot better and she loved him from the start. I have only read the first 2 books, so I might change my mind after "The One."
I like Aspen so much in the beginning with America, they just seemed to fit. However as the series moves forward I start to love America's relationship with Maxon more. Aspen shouldn't have broken up with her.
SPOILER
Maxon for sureee, Aspen did things that just didn't make sense at all.
He told Mer to sign up for The Selection but got mad at her when she "Won".
He also saw how much more difficult it would be if he came to the palace, he still did.
He also NEVER asked her if everything was okay, he just kissed her.
In some moments that's a nice thing but I don't think that was the right time, I don't like him at all.
I also think Lucy did deserve better.
I know this all sounds really harsh but it's what I thought about him.

OMG! This is tough! I love them both!! My personal option is Maxon. They are well suited for each other. At first i was fully #teamaspen, but towards the ending, i was fully #teamMaxon. Maxon was always there for her when she needed him. He showed her love and respect! She was able to have something with Maxon that she was never able to have with Aspen. America and aspen might say they love each other, but they didn’t exactly sound like it. As for mason, yo could definitely tell he loved her! Team Maxon all the way!!!
MAXON ALL THE WAY!! I love him so much! <3 He is my Hottie!! (I guess he's Mer's hottie, but i'll just steal him ;))
Maxon, 100%. Aspen continued to force himself into America's life even though he could see how perfectly happy he could be without him, and he was after all the one that made her sign up in the first place. At first I thought Aspen was sweet, but by the end of the 2nd book I thought he was too possessive. But that's just what I think.
Honestly, I thought both of them were really bland.
There were times when I couldn't tell who was in which scene with America because they both were so similar and void of personality. Maxon is funny or charming supposedly, and Aspen is supportive and prideful. I think that's where their personalities begin and end.
I did prefer Aspen, however because he was the one America turned to when she had no one. Maxon was off with the other girls (which I deeply disliked) and all of the Selected were very competitive with each other so America felt alone. But Aspen didn't abandon her. He was loyal and stayed with her even though he knew she couldn't be in a relationship with him.
Maxon really played with America's feelings by always changing up his tune and being like, "America, I love you. You're the one I'm going to pick" to literally going out with another girl and then whispering the same stuff to her. And while I didn't like how Aspen's pride got wounded because American tried to help him, I appreciated when he came to terms with his stupidity and apologized. I genuinely believe that he wanted her to live a better life than he could provide. And while part of me agrees that it was kind of dumb for him to break up with her, I wonder where else could their relationship have gone? Because if America was dating Aspen while she was in the Selection, they couldn't be together anyway. So what would be the point?
Anyway, I just don't think I like Maxon very much. He sweet-talked a bunch of girls at once and then made out with Celeste but then he got all angry at America for.... standing too close to Aspen? and touching his chest? And he doesn't even let her explain, even though America let Maxon explain after the whole Celeste incident. Which was just pure cheating, unlike what America was doing. Her only crime was sneaking out to meet Aspen. They just talked, it was clear that nothing romantic was going on. Nothing romantic had been going on for quite a while, actually.
So yeah. Aspen really understands America's frustration behind the caste systems and he supports her when she feels alone. He's loyal and basically would follow her to the ends of the earth. They have a cute dynamic and her family loves him. Maxon is literally out kissing other girls and misleading America. He literally didn't even care about the caste system until America showed up and was like "yeah, this is what's happening to your people" and Maxon was like "gotta keep the pretty girl happy." I understand that he's not a bad person and that he's just really privileged but I don't really sympathize with that crap. Maxon really just seemed more like a prize to me, something that seems perfect but is actually just being held together by a single thread. Aspen was realer and I understood his bitterness and desire to protect America.
But in the end, I really didn't care who she ended up with.

I'm so into Maxon, like, it's unfair to compare cause Maxon is a whole new level. Also we had the opportunity to know Maxon more than Aspen, due to the entire book.
In general, Aspen feels boring to me while Maxon has my entire heart and soul.

Maxonnnnnnnnn I feel like Aspen just gave up when things got tough but Maxon is dedicated.
Maxon for sure. I hate Aspen for breaking up with her like that and then showing up at her new home expecting her to love him when she's there to love Maxon. Maxon was sweet and funny and overall such a lovely guy.
Although I don’t really have anything against Aspen, Maxon is the better choice. Maxon would literally do anything for America and while Aspen might also, he gave up on her and their relationship wayyyy to easily. Wasn’t their love strong? Personally, I think Aspen and America just had a passion. Maxon and America had such a strong love that fit and molded perfectly. Some people say that Maxon would play America but the point of the selection was for Maxon to get to know every girl. America was “confused on her feelings” throughout most of the books, Maxon had to find a wife no matter what so he had to have other people in case America backed down. Maxon was such a sweetheart that treated America right, I think Aspen was just a temporary passion and Maxon was her true love. I don’t think Aspen is a bad character but things between him and America felt forced and kind of weird. I was team Maxon since the beginning although Aspen wasn’t bad
Definitely Maxon! Aspen throughout the series has been gaslighting America into thinking that she is meant to love him and be with him. He pushes this romance between them *spoiler* even after seeing the caning of poor Marlee.
Maxon! A hundred tiles Maxon! Sure he made mistakes and so did Aspen, but he wins without a doubt. He truly loved and cared for America in a way that Aspen never did and ever could.
Team Maxon!!
Okay so here are some of my thoughts: Aspen wanted a better life for America that he felt he couldn't provide but if the love they had for each other really meant something, they would have figured it out. Why did he give up so easily especially after two years of being together? Why did he give up so easily when America wasn't bothered by it and WANTED to go through the ups and downs of life with him? He lost his chance.
America is better off with Maxon. He's nurturing, kind, genuine, and they complement each other. He loved her for who she was. They both taught each other so much and have allowed each other to see a different perspective/world view (since they both came from two different upbringings). They have helped each other and always could fall back on the bond that they had. Their relationship was special and together they would benefit the country better than anyone else. (I have only read the first book so far). Maxon loves America for who she really is despite everything, and America loves Maxon for who he is despite everything.

honestly i am 100% maxon for one huge reason... Aspen abandoned her at her worst, and came crawling back when she was at her best bc he thought it would bring him up, but Maxon loved her at her worst and was willing to pull himself down to raise her up.
I'm kinda 50/50 but at the beginning of the book I have to say, Aspen, although Maxon did grow on me so by the end of the book I would say Maxon just because it seems like he and America are meant to be even if they make a TON of mistakes along the way and their world is messed up.
MAXON! If Aspen wasn't a coward and broke up with America, I'd say Aspen. But if he TRULY loved her, he would've fought harder and never left her.
