Rachael (allons-y-bookworm) | 4735 comments GIVE US A CLUE
Duration: 1 January 2021 - 31 December 2021

This challenge is inspired by the classic board game Clue/Cluedo. To set the scene, you're investigating a murder at Reading Challenge Manor and you will be looking for clues in the books that you read. Books can be in any genre unless a prompt specifies otherwise. Prompts may be repeated but each book can only count once.

Suspects
Read a book with any shade of the following colours on the cover:
Mr Green - green
Colonel Mustard - yellow
Mrs Peacock - blue
Professor Plum - purple
Miss Scarlet - red
Mrs White - white

Weapons
Read a book with the following word (or related word, not limited to the examples below) on the cover or in the title:
Candlestick or flames or fire
Dagger or knife or sword
Lead Pipe or musical instrument or writing instrument
Revolver or gun or pistol
Rope or string or ribbon
Wrench or spanner or any other tool

Rooms
Ballroom: Read a book which features a character who is a dancer
Billiard Room: Read a book that features your favourite hobby, game, sport or craft.
Cellar: In the board game, the solution can be found here so read a detective, mystery or true crime book
Conservatory: Read a book where a character has to save or conserve someone or something
Dining Room: Read a book with an item of food or drink on the cover
Hall: A hall tends to be the first room that welcomes you to the manor so read a book that is the first in a series.
Kitchen: Read a cookery book or a book with a chef as a character
Library: Read a book you have borrowed from a library or from someone else
Lounge: Here you can relax with a book in your favourite genre.
Secret Passages: Read a book with "secret" in the title
Study: Read a book about a subject you're passionate about or would like to learn more about

Every time you complete the following sentence - "I deduce it was [suspect] in the [room] with the [weapon]," we will update which tier of fictional detectives you fall into.
For example, I read Norse Mythology because it had a hammer on the cover, Eldest for the red cover and A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes so I can deduce that it was Miss Scarlet in the Kitchen with the wrench

1 deduction = Scooby Doo
2-3 deductions = Pink Panther
4-5 deductions = Nancy Drew
6-7 deductions = Jessica Fletcher
8-9 deductions = Hercule Poirot
10+ deductions = Sherlock Holmes

Also, if one of your deductions is 100% correct, you will also receive a medal of commendation🏅. We have randomly chosen whodunnit but will not be revealing the correct answer until later on in the year.

🔍Whodunnit?🔍
Clue #1: one element of the correct answer appears in the example deduction in this post

When updating your progress, please note I will not be checking original posts and your comment should include the number of books completed and also details of any deductions made.

TerryJane | 4020 comments Oh, this sounds so fun! I love CLUE! Question: Since there are more rooms than there are suspects and weapons, will each deduction require three new and distinct books? I understand that I couldn't use The Book of Candlelight in two categories, like for both candlestick and Mrs. Peacock. But if I use it for the weapon in my first deduction (say, Mr. Green with the candlestick in the kitchen), can I use the same weapon/book in a second deduction (Col. Mustard with the candlestick in the study)? Or would I need a new candlestick/fire/flame book?

Hi TerryJane,
For this challenge, each book can only count once but prompts can be repeated. Each deduction will require 3 different books.

Hi Agnieszka,

To answer your questions:
1. The Weapon can appear as a word on the cover (i.e. as part of the title) or as an item on the cover. Your cover of A Christmas Carol would definitely count.
2. You can read your books in any order and report a deduction when you have all three parts of it
3. Unless a challenge or prompt states otherwise, there is no minimum page count in this group.

Yes, weapons will be a bit tricky for me too. To clarify for everyone, it can appear as an item or a word on the cover. You are also not limited to the examples listed above - if you can somehow link it to the main weapons, then it counts. For example, I would accept if you had a cover with someone with long hair for "rope". Hope this gives everyone some flexibility

Every time you complete the following sentence - "I deduce it was [suspect] in the [room] with the [weapon]," we will update which tier of fictional detectives you fall into.
For example, I read Norse Mythology because it had a hammer on the cover, Eldest for the red cover and A Plain Cookery Book for the Working Classes so I can deduce that it was Miss Scarlet in the Kitchen with the wrench
1 deduction = Scooby Doo
2-3 deductions = Pink Panther
4-5 deductions = Nancy Drew
6-7 deductions = Jessica Fletcher
8-9 deductions = Hercule Poirot
10+ deductions = Sherlock Holmes
