I think Homegoing had a family tree. I think...

What will you read for this prompt?

Listopia: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Heather L (wordtrix) | 780 comments Two cozy mysteries I have read:

Aunt Dimity and the Family Tree by Nancy Atherton (Note: this is book 16 of a series, but I don’t think you’ll miss too much reading out of order)

Family Skeletons by Rett MacPherson (first book in a genealogy series)

message 4: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 366 comments Lynn, the listopia subject says a book your best friend would like, but the title is with a family tree.

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 128 comments All I can think about is the Black family tree in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

message 6: by Meghan (new)

Meghan (fyrefly_faerie) | 4 comments If I remember correctly One Hundred Years of Solitude has one and maybe The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has a family tree at the beginning.

message 7: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 366 comments The Incryptid series by Seanan Mcguire has a family tree in the front of each book. Series starts with Discount Armageddon.

message 8: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (surfybridge) | 24 comments I'm sure The Lord of the Rings includes numerous family trees!

Lauren Oertel | 764 comments Happy to see Love Medicine on the list since I have a copy on my shelf. I also might consider rereading Homegoing next year.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 263 comments I'm hoping to find some good historical fiction for this one personally.

I recall some of the Philippa Gregory books have family trees.

Thanks! I wasn't looking forward to getting all my books off the shelves to check for family trees but now I know I have at least one if I don't stumble across another.

message 17: by eligru (new)

eligru | 12 comments Many of Cassandra Clare's books have family trees (they can contain spoilers for other books though). I'm pretty sure Clockwork Princess has one. It usually depends on the edition

Jennifer T. (jent998) | 231 comments Does anyone know if The Cousins would work here?

The Cousins by Karen M. McManus

You are right about Philippa Gregory Thanks for the reminder and I have some of her books.

The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni

Yes it does (at least the UK edition has a family tree so I would expect it to be in all of them).

I like this prompt but it seems impossible to search for. When I google, all I get are books ABOUT creating a family tree. I'm glad we have crowdsourcing on this one :-) I'm counting on it!!

message 25: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 178 comments I read The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia this summer and LOVED it! I also referred to the family tree often and spent a lot of time just studying it. There was so much breeding within the royal families that it was interesting to see who was related to who and how! I would highly recommend! It was also YA nonfiction so easy enough to read without getting too heavy.

message 26: by Tania (new)

Tania | 678 comments I found a lot of books with maps while looking for a family tree, lol, but I finally found one on my TBR:
Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.

message 27: by Sharmon (new)

Sharmon (tpgirl) | 68 comments I just checked my daughter's copy of We Were Liars and there is a family tree in it, so I may go with that.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

message 28: by Laura (new)

Laura | 44 comments Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan has a family tree.

message 29: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 767 comments Argh, this is a toughie. It's hard to know if they do without looking at the actual book, as I can't for the life of me find any decent lists online. I can find a handful of novels featuring "genealogy", but of the ones on the list that I've read I know they don't actually feature family trees in them.

message 30: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Sanchez (mariroxursox) | 22 comments For this topic I am going with The Lady of the Rivers. I love historical fiction and have had this on my shelves for way too long.

The Lady of the Rivers (The Cousins' War, #3) by Philippa Gregory

message 32: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 97 comments Ann wrote: "I feel like I don’t quite understand this prompt. Help!"

They mean a book that has a diagram of how people are related in the front or back of the book.

Like this in Crazy Rich Asians https://images.summitmedia-digital.co...

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 263 comments If anyone wants to check if a book has a family tree- you can use the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon's site for most books. I've found a few with family trees this way.

Great idea!

message 35: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 46 comments Cleopatra: Last Queen of Egypt has the Ptolemy family tree. Lots of inbreeding in that one.

message 36: by Megan (new)

Megan | 361 comments Really any biography of a Tudor or any king or queen is bound to have a family tree in the first few pages.

message 37: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 125 comments Megan wrote: "Really any biography of a Tudor or any king or queen is bound to have a family tree in the first few pages."

I'm probably going to go the royalty route. So far thinking: Marie Antoinette: The Journey

message 38: by Knight (new)

Knight (theknightgarden) | 25 comments this is probably a bit of a stretch, but would priory of the orange tree work for this? it doesn't have a tree persay, but it does have a list of characters and who they are related to.

message 39: by Kristy (new)

Kristy Deruiter | 2 comments Jennifer wrote: "Does anyone know if The Cousins would work here?

The Cousins by Karen M. McManus"

I'm not sure, but I'm planning to use that for the 3 generations prompt!

message 40: by Harmke (new)

Harmke | 435 comments Just a few from my historical fiction list for historical fiction and family saga lovers:

The Eighth Life
New York
Paris
London
Russka: The Novel of Russia
Kent Family Chronicles by John Jakes

Heather (heatherbowman) | 903 comments The Royal We and The Heir Affair both have a family tree.

Laura Miles | 244 comments Sara wrote: "this is probably a bit of a stretch, but would priory of the orange tree work for this? it doesn't have a tree persay, but it does have a list of characters and who they are related to."

That would totally work! Family trees don't have to be arranged in the traditional "tree" structure. This perfect as Priory has been on my TBR for a long time and I was really struggling to find a book for this category!

Drakeryn | 708 comments Sara wrote: "this is probably a bit of a stretch, but would priory of the orange tree work for this? it doesn't have a tree persay, but it does have a list of characters and who they are related to."

If this counts, Gideon the Ninth has such a list at the start. The sequel, Harrow the Ninth, also has a character list (though I'm a bit more iffy on that because it doesn't say anything about who is related to whom).

message 44: by Marie-Claude (new)

Marie-Claude | 12 comments If you want to combine the Tudor period and historical fiction, I would highly recommend Hilary Mantel's trilogy about Thomas Cromwell: Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror & the Light. All three have several family trees at the beginning. Mantel writes beautifully and the amount of research that went into these books is impressive.

message 45: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 160 comments A Christmas Surprise by Jenny Colgan

message 46: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 698 comments Thinking about it a little differently, there could be an actual tree that has a significance to a family in the narrative. I can't think of a book example off the top of my head, but the Diamond Rio song "Meet in the Middle" has a pine tree that ended up in the backyard that reminded the couple of how they could work out their differences.

I was thinking about this too, in An American Marriage by Tayari Jones An American Marriage, there is a tree that is important to the main woman's family.

message 48: by Gina (new)

Gina (ginanicoll) | 29 comments If anyone else is trying to find BIPOC authors for this challenge, I found a couple after looking through my shelves:
The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez (Someone else mentioned this above as maybe having a family tree. My edition for sure does!)

I'd also echo the Louise Erdrich recommendation, who is a great person to turn to for this challenge. In addition to Love Medicine, mentioned above, these are her other books (that I own!) that have a family tree:
Tracks
The Bingo Palace
Tales of Burning Love
The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse
Antelope Woman

Aside from the last one, most of those are part of her Love Medicine series, which I've heard can also be read as standalones. Highly recommend her work!

Yup. And the family tree in the Crimes of Grindelwald movie! (which must be mentioned in the screenplay as well, right?)

The Cousins should work though so I'll go with that!
