The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is #92 on our 100 list and one of the group reads for December 2020. It was published serially in 1905, and as a single novel in 1906.

it's pretty bleak. Apparently the descriptions of the slaughterhouses caused quite a stir after it was published and prompted reforms. Depressing but certainly worth reading.
This book is a must read. It is absolutely the most depressing and also one of the most stimulating books I have read. I just kept hoping things would get better for the protagonist, but well, ....
