Read "War and Peace" in a Year - 2022 Group discussion

This is my first time trying to read this epic novel. Reading & have the Audio book as well, wanted to hear pronunciation. Also reading the Spark Notes.

I read there are over 600 characters in this novel, not all primary of course. Wikipedia has two helpful family tree graphics near the top of the War and Peace page.

I felt for Pierre at the soirée - I never know what to say or how to act at parties, either. And Antole and Dolokhov - what a pair of party animals they are!

Literally just started, and I already love the characters and the writing. The writing is so lively and animated, and I love the character of Anna Pavolovna and Prince Vasili. I definitely get "Dangerous Liaisons" vibes reminiscent of the persiflage between the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont. Certainly not the dry read at all that I was lead to believe it is. Looking forward to more.

(view spoiler)[I related to Pierre's awkwardness a lot - never quite knowing how to act or what to say, or otherwise getting the attempt completely wrong. The relatives scheming for his dying father's money actually made me laugh in places: I'm so glad the greedy so-and-sos got nothing, which is what they deserved.

I found the rigid clockwork life of Prince Nikolay quite amusing: a bit reminiscent of Phileas Fogg. Marya is also a very endearing character, with her strong faith and love for her brother. However, I feel that the concern Andrey and Lise have about the upcoming birth of their baby might be rather bleak foreshadowing... (hide spoiler)]

It would seem that Pierre’s illegitimacy creates a cloud for him wherever he goes. Without this there is perhaps so much more.
