We'll start 2021 with a new thread for our reviews - I'll close the old one a bit later when people have finished posting 2020 reviews.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments The first book I've finished in 2021: a reread via audio...

As always, Rupert Degas makes the fourth instalment in Sulari Gentill's Rowland Sinclair series, Paving the New Road, an absolute pleasure to listen to. So pleased I still have six more of these to enjoy!

Andrea | 2163 comments My final book for 2020 was A Girl Called Justice by Elly Griffiths; a nostalgic schoolgirl detective novel. I really enjoyed it.

They're good fun aren't they Andrea! I was messed up when I got my copy from the library and ended up with #2. Someone had put both #1 and #2 in together for the editions so I thought I had #1. I'll be getting it from the library soon :)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments Dead End Drive by American author, Ian Kirkpatrick may appeal to some horror fans... it is intended to entertain, but falls a little short.

Carolyn | 9836 comments Radio Life by Derek B. Miller Radio Life by Derek B. Miller is a change of genre from his previous quirky crime novels to a post apocalyptic world, but was a very enjoyable read.

Carolyn | 9836 comments My first book for 2021 is the very enjoyable The Night Hawks (Ruth Galloway Mysteries #13) by Elly Griffiths The Night Hawks by Elly Griffiths, one of the best yet in this series, mainly because the characters, the archaeology and the local legend are so interesting and come together so well.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments Any of Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series is always a winner with me, but I'd never listened to an audio version. I really enjoyed The Silent Wife, especially Kathleen Early's rendition of Amanda.

Andrea | 2163 comments I've been listening to The Crossing by AA B. Michael Radburn over the new year period. The protagonist is a National Park ranger, which is something a bit different for the crime/thriller genre. I liked it.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments British author, Sarah Vaughan’s fourth novel, Little Disasters, is a brilliant, thought provoking read, and there’s a certain part, which I can’t describe without spoilers, that really resonates with me about something from my childhood.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments This was my bridging book; I started it in 2020 and finished it in 2021. Any Ordinary Day: Blindsides, Resilience and What Happens After the Worst Day of Your Life in a non fiction by Leigh Sales who is an Australian journo.

I did NOT like it, I suspect that people who like the author might. I suspect that there may even be people out there who find it as mindful, insightful, thoughtful ect ect as all the official reviewers find it. For myself, it mostly made me angry.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams 5* review here
The Night Swim by Megan Goldin The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Hitchhiker's Guide, #2) by Douglas Adams

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments I'm so grateful that Wollongong City Libraries gives me access to the wonderful audio versions of Sulari Gentill's Rowland Sinclair series narrated by Rupert Degas.
The fifth instalment, Gentlemen Formerly Dressed is just as enjoyable and entertaining as the first four.

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments My first review for the year is for the worthy Pulitzer Prize winner Beloved by Toni Morrison. It's hard to understand the kind of treatment 'former' slaves still endured after the end of the Civil War.

Technically, it's an easy read; emotionally, it's a heartbreaker.

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments My first book of 2021 was more lighthearted. We know from the title to look forward to The Great Escape from Woodlands Nursing Home, but it's an after dark innovation suggested by author Joanna Nell that interests me. I do love a good idea.
