Tammie | 1392 comments Hello Bond fans (hopefully) :) My husband is a fanatic!

I hope you all are as excited as I am to have some UNO fun. I'll suggest we use these first days to get to know each other a bit and chat about anything UNO. This is a fun challenge and has been successful it getting me out of my reading comfort zone a time or two for sure.

Our theme this year is 80s movies. James Bond was a staple in the 80s...yes I was there...wondering if you have a favorite Bond?...mine is Pierce Brosnan with Sean Connery a close 2nd.

Please take a minute to introduce yourself and I'll start with a few std questions...if anyone has a question or 2 you want to ask our entire group, please feel free to do so...we can keep the conversation moving this way.

I'm Tammie and I've played UNO at least 4 times I think
I'm a bit of a Read-a-holic and am on GRs all the time.
I live in the U.S. Central time zone so this hour is pushing it a bit for me. I do check in several times during a day.
My fav genre is Romantic-Suspense, PNR, Mystery
My husband and I are empty nesters and I'm retired from my full time carrier and have been selling Real Estate now for just over 10 years. It's been very busy this last year, but I still have lots of time for reading.

▲I'll be using the empty threads above for links we'll need in the challenge...so if you can't find something or need to check the time left etc...you can always refer back here to the beginning of our thread.

I encourage everyone to 'friend each other' if you are comfortable.
Don't forget to create your UNO shelf if you haven't already :)

message 12: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Hello, everyone! I'm Sara, one of the co-captains.

So, this year is an 80s movie theme and while I've seen quite a lot of them (my favorite is The Lost Boys!), I actually haven't seen any of the old Bond movies. Oops. Guess I'm going to have to do an old Bond movie marathon now.

This is my second year playing UNO. I'm a bit of a bookaholic, as my family keeps telling me I probably need a 12 step program to stop buying books. I live on the West Coast so I'm on the pacific time zone, but you'll probably find me online at all kinds of crazy times.

I'll read just about any genre but my favorite genre is fantasy (all sub-genres) and Young Adult fiction (also of all subgenres).

I'm a college student currently doing online school thanks to the pandemic and also currently unemployed thanks to the pandemic, so I've got a lot of free time.

Ambi | 172 comments Hey guys! I’m Ambi.
I might be addicted to challenges and GR but that’s a problem for another day. ;D
I live in US CST and find myself in GR in most of my free time.
My fav genre is Magical Realism, Philosophy and Horror but I end up reading whatever I find.
I’m going to university in fall and I’m afraid it might cut down my reading time. We shall see.
This is my second year playing UNO and super excited to play. Love the 80s theme!

Here’s the link to my shelf - https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 14: by Frida (new)

Frida (butthenyouread) | 329 comments Hi folks! I'm Frida, also a co-captain.
Can't say I have an extensive knowledge of 80s films to be honest... I've only seen When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride off the list. But my dad would be upset with me if I didn't say that Sean Connery is my favorite Bond.

As for books, I really will read any genre. I always prefer writing over plot, so I don't care what the book is about as long as it's got good writing.

My personal history is a bit of an all-over-the-map mess, but currently I'm a university student living in Barcelona (6 hours ahead of EST). I just finished my exams last week, so that frees up some time for reading.

Can't wait to start this challenge with you all!

message 15: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 347 comments Hi all! Tara here - I'm PST for reference! This is my first UNO challenge, excited to give it a go.

I'm a pretty avid reader, favorite genres: historical fiction, historical romance, mystery/thriller and I've recently gotten into fantasy (witches in particular!). All of that being said, I like most genres, I'm not too picky!

Fave Bond: Sean Connery of course. But, disclaimer, have not seen many Bond movies.

Excited for the challenge with y'all!

Cheers,
T

Tammie | 1392 comments Welcome All! Feel free to chat and ask any questions during this quiet period. We'll be waiting for everyone to check in before we post our SS. ETA Friday...depending.

Looking forward to some UNO!

message 17: by Ambi (new)

Ambi | 172 comments Tammie, are you disappointed that they used Sean Connery's poster? :)

message 18: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 541 comments Hi everyone! I'm Laila. This is actually my 6th year doing Uno. It was the very first team challenge I ever participated in on Goodreads, and was actually the challenge that got me into reading challenges to begin with. It is still one of my favorite team challenges =)

I haven't watched too many Bond movies. But the ones I've watched had Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as Bond. Out of the two, I enjoyed Daniel Craig's movies better.

I live in the Chicago area and work as a night nurse, so I'm on here at all hours of day and night. I do have a 3 and a half year old that keeps me pretty busy, especially with preschool e-learning, but I still make sure to read everyday.

My favorite genre is romance - any romance from historical to contemporary, paranormal, and thrillers. The only genre I don't read is horror. I'm too big of a scaredy-cat.

Can't wait to get started on this challenge with you all!

Nah...Sean’s good. We can share our fav Bonds throughout right!

message 21: by Ophélie (new)

Ophélie (ophelied) | 134 comments Hello, hello, I'm Ophélie.

This is my first UNO-challenge, and my first group-challenge!
Like many of you, I'm an avid reader and lover of books & all things bookish. I live in Belgium (CET), so I'll probably be more active on GR during your nighttime 😴. I work full time, but spend almost all of my free time reading.

If you would have asked me two years ago, I would have told you that my favorite genre is Crime&Mystery. At the age of 37 I have discovered YA, Fantasy, Romance, Magical realism... (and combinations of) and really enjoyed it. My TBR grows faster than I can read, but I guess that's a good thing 🤣 (although my wallet doesn't always agree).

Really looking forward to this challenge and reading with you all!

Oh right, fav Bond. Daniel Craig comes to mind first, but Sean Connery is definitely a close second. This movie actually came out the year I was born, so good choice😁 !

Kristen Joanne (kristen856) | 177 comments Hey guys!! My name is Kristen and I’m from South Jersey! I love reading all types of books but horror/suspense is my thing! This is my first year playing UNO. I signed up because I love reading but I also love a good competition. I also want to step out of my comfort zone and try different genres. I can’t wait to start UNO with all of you!!

Kristen Joanne (kristen856) | 177 comments I did want to ask a quick question. I haven’t signed up for anything else during this challenge should I keep it that way? I typically read 1-2 books a week and at least 6 a month. Let me know what you all think thank you!

message 24: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments @Kristen It's entirely up to you. I usually do multiple challenges at a time. Though, I tend to read around 20 to 30 books a month so I like the extra challenge. But, it can get challenging juggling more than one challenge and getting everything done. So, yea, I'd say it's a preference thing. If you want to do multiple challenges than it's up to you. But, if that would stress you out than it's best to just stick with the one. This is all about having fun after all and that's the important part.

message 25: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Joanne (kristen856) | 177 comments Thanks Sara! That’s amazing how much reading you do I am jealous! I’ll see how the first month goes before I commit to anything else. Thanks again.

message 26: by Ambi (new)

Ambi | 172 comments Oh wow Sara, that's an amazing number you're maintaining. I wish I could too.

I'm doing multiple challenges at the moment. The trick is to have a balance between open-ended challenges and timed ones because the latter would require more of your attention if you intend to complete them. You can sign up for an open-ended challenge. There's so many different themes.

message 27: by Tammie (last edited Jan 20, 2021 10:16PM) (new)

Tammie | 1392 comments I usually have 8-10 challenges going at the same time not counting the open ended annual challenges. My personal challenge is for the books I read to work for them all. Some months I don’t come close because real life gets in the way ;) I usually have a book and an audio book going at the same time. Crazy I know.

I rarely buy a book...although I have subscriptions to Audible, KU and Scribd. For free books I use Overdrive, Hoopla and Bookbub. I think I own about 500 books I’ve gotten from Kindle free. Of course I also love my library.

message 28: by Sara (last edited Jan 20, 2021 10:50PM) (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments @Ambi Yea, pretty much the entire trick to doing multiple challenges is balancing. I try to layer challenges. I have my yearly challenges, and then I occasionally take quarterly or monthly challenges and try to double count books so they can fit all the challenges I'm currently undertaking.

@Tammie Wow, that's a lot of subscriptions. I'm not much of an audiobook person. I just can't focus without the words right in front of me. But, I do have Libby through my local library to check out books, and I periodically buy books when they come up on sale on Kindle so I've grown quite the digital collection. My only "book" membership I pay for is with Comixology which is for comic books. I'm more of a fan of physical books though, so my largest collection is my physical books. I've pretty much overtaken every bookshelf in my family's house with my books at this point.

message 29: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 347 comments I’m getting my master of library and information science degree, so as you can imagine I pretty actively use the library!

I also struggle with audiobooks - it’s hard for me to get lost in the book (also, I can read so much faster than they can and it makes it hard when it’s a mystery!) I normally do podcasts when I’m in the car. And I’m normally reading at least one physical and one digital book.

Haven’t done any challenges except yearly ones, like A-Z, etc. so really excited for this one!

message 30: by Tammie (last edited Jan 21, 2021 06:12AM) (new)

Tammie | 1392 comments For our new UNO players...for as long as I’ve played there’s been a mini-challenge at about midway in the month. Now the mods could change the rules on us...but be aware the books used for the mini may also be used for our UNO card...what I’m trying to suggest is that we pace ourselves.

We’ll want to target to be about half done when we get to the mini...more to think about...additional thoughts welcome:)

We definitely want to finish but need to be careful not to burn ourselves out too.

Tammie | 1392 comments description NSNA - Announcement!

Hi everyone...our team SS is ready! Your captains have worked on some guidelines for our use of this SS. It's a 'working document' that we'll all use to populate our completions. If you have questions, please ask. PLEASE READ

1. We ask that you limit claims for unread books to 4 books you'll read OR what you'll read in a 1 week period. For some a 1 week period may be 1 book. Let's work to fill in books for our color cards 1st if that's possible.

2. Please only claim what you plan to read.

3. When you post your book, post a link to the version of the book you'll be reading. There are instructions for doing this step at the top of our thread if you need them...ask if you need help.

4. As you read, please populate the SS with the other options your book may work for. This will allow us to move things around if we need to. (see column G)

5. There is no need to post a completion post UNLESS you cannot access the SS. If this is the case, please follow the post guidelines at the top of our thread.

6. Once you have finished your book, fill in the completion date and add the book to your designated UNO shelf. By doing this, the tracking sheet will allow us to reconcile what's been read. All very techy, but it saves us time...more time for reading :)

6. Your captains have each claimed 1 spot in hopes to provide an example for filling out the SS. See our names 'highlighted' in blue

7. Please try to read what you love!

These guidelines will help us as a team and will make your captains jobs' much easier.

The link to our SS can be found at Message 7.
-> https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Recommendations:
1. save a link to the SS as you'll be accessing it often
2. If you haven't already, mark this discussion for notifications
3. Please try and checkin a couple of times per week

Tara Peace | 347 comments Alright - I've added a few to the list - please look over and let me know if I've done everything correctly.

Couple of questions:
-I've read One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow and Broken Harbor - does that count (towards Sara in Hand 1 and Frida in Hand 2) or do I have to read it during the challenge?
-I used "the Overdue Life of Amy Byler" as an O - does that count or is "The" included?

Thanks!

Books cannot be started until February 1...see countdown timer in post # 6...once the challenge is 'going' then it's finish dates.

Articles can be discarded...so The Overdue Life could be used for 1-'O' or 2-'T'

**I changed your reference to 'surname' to LN...you just need to add your links and you are good to go :)

Frida (butthenyouread) | 329 comments Excited to start this, February can't come fast enough!
Gonna look over my TBR shelf and add in a couple more books to the spreadsheet over the weekend.

message 38: by Frida (new)

Frida (butthenyouread) | 329 comments @Tara what did you think of One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow? It's been on my TBR for ages which is why I listed it, but I'm not convinced about it. Do you recommend it?

Tara Peace | 347 comments Frida wrote: "@Tara what did you think of One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow? It's been on my TBR for ages which is why I listed it, but I'm not convinced about it. Do you recommend it?"

I gave it 4 stars - I remember it taking me a minute to get into it, but it was really beautifully written. It was also one of those books that made me a little uncomfortable while reading (bc of subject matter) so that could have something to do with why it took me a little longer to read it!

message 40: by Tara (new)

Tara Peace | 347 comments Alright - I switched up a bit because I was a little confused. Committing to 2 books for the first week of February and one is a color card (turquoise counts as blue, right?!)

Tara, Frida and ALL

post your cover here for a ruling on color. If we can’t decide as a team one of us leaders can take it to the mods. I’d prefer to make color decisions ourselves though. Tara you’ll be our first.

Also...if you know you are reading a book that someone else on the team has read...go ahead and move it to a REV spot unless it’s a color cover...then be sure to put REV as another option and note the teammate who’s also read it.

Thanks

Tammie | 1392 comments For those who would like to help covering color cards first we have several. Lots of yellow needed...

Red 1
Yellow 2
Yellow 3 Wild4 taken - Ambi
Yellow 4
Blue 4 Wild4 taken - Tammie
Yellow 7
Yellow 8
Red 8

We also have 5x Wild4 cards which are used to duplicate our color cards. They have to each be for a different color card.

If it helps, you can claim cards in this thread and someone can fill it in for you :)

Frida (butthenyouread) | 329 comments Hey group! For the moment I've claimed yellow 7, and put it into the spreadsheet. But I wanted to verify with you guys that it actually counts as a yellow book. It's called Voices of the Windrush Generation: The real story told by the people themselves by David Matthews. You can also find it on my uno-two-three shelf, so far it's the only book on there.
To me it's exactly 50% yellow. Do you think it would count? (7 because it starts with V)

message 44: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments @Frida I'd say it seems yellow enough to me.

I’ll post a link to a color checking app that we use to check...realize it’s not always 100% accurate but it’s good for %. Minimum is 50%

I've placed it onto a regular 7 card on the spreadsheet. I'll look for other colored cards tomorrow.

message 48: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Yea, color cards are a pain. I have a yellow 7, and a yellow 2, so I've claimed those two. I'll keep digging to see if I've got any other colors I could cover if needed.
