Kayleigh | 9 comments I'm thinking of doing a 1960's decade challenge, any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome

Some of my current ideas are:

The L-Shaped Room by Lynne Reid Banks (1960)
Tell me a Riddle by Tillie Olsen (1961)
The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing (1962)
The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan (1963)
The Wall by Marlen Haushofer (1963)
Ariel by Sylvia Plath (1965)
The Millstone by Margaret Drabble (1965)
Wide Sargasso sea by Jean Rhys (1966)
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (1967)
Picnic at hanging rock by Joan Lindsay (1967)
Slouching towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion (1968)
Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou (1969)

Looks like a great lineup, Kayleigh. I can personally attest to the quality of the works by Lessing, Haushofer, Rhys, and Angelou. Others I'd recommend include:

The Book of Lamentations by Rosario Castellanos (1962)
Eichmann in Jerusalem by Hannah Arendt (1963, nonfic)
The Passion According to G.H. - Clarice Lispector (1964)
Journey into the Whirlwind - Evgenia Ginzburg (1967, nonfic)
The Quest for Christa T. - Christa Wolf (1968)

Hope that helps!

Kathleen | 250 comments I like your plans so far! If you need any backups, here are a few from the 60's that I've enjoyed:

The Violent Bear It Away by Flannery O'Connor (1960)
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (1962)
The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence (1964)
The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin (1969)

Kayleigh | 9 comments Thank you so much for the recommendations. I've just picked up The passion according to G.H, We have always lived in the castle and Ariel from the library.

Kayleigh | 9 comments Only six more books to go for the BINGO challenge

My favourite reads up to now have been
Owls Do Cry
Station Eleven
A Room of One's Own
We Should All Be Feminists
The Glorious Heresies

To be honest I've enjoyed the majority of my reads for this challenge.

It's a shame I didn't get around to doing the decade challenge, I've decided to postpone it till next year now, but I'm still thinking of keeping it 60's.

Nell (sackvillepanza) | 60 comments Lots of good reads this year, Kayleigh! What did you think of Convenience Store Woman and Station Eleven? I’ve thought about adding both to my TBR.

message 10: by Kayleigh (new)

Kayleigh | 9 comments literally just finished reading Surfacing by Margaret Atwood, completing this challenge by the skin of my teeth.

Nell, I would definitely recommend you put both books on your TBR pile.

I read both of those this year! I think they are worth reading.
