Vanessa (thehispanicbookworm) | 338 comments Lyrical and poignant, this multigenerational story follows the lives of one Colombian family separated by borders.

Elizabeth (biffreads) | 1 comments I loved this story - it was so complex and emotional and raw. I couldn't put it down. I think it brings so many important issues to light in a context that people can empathize with.

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) Part of my family is living in Colombia, in Bogota, and they love it. I can't get them to immigrate to the US, even though I've told them things will be better here once they get settled. They like Bogota's night life, the customs, we are from Spain, so speak the language, and the health care in Bogota is better than here in the US, with our broken healthcare system and so many uninsured. These are people who could come here legally, yet they hesitate to do so. So, I couldn't get into the book. Had the people been Venezuelan, I would have liked it better. Strange, though. It wasn't that long ago that Venezuela and Colombia were one country, yet the Colombians look down on the Venezuelans and see them as very inferior. If I didn't have this familiarity with Bogota and all of Colombia, maybe I would have liked it better. I don't usually do this, but I might read it again, and this time, try not to let my Colombian relatives influence me as I read.

Vanessa (thehispanicbookworm) | 338 comments This book was great. The parts of the siblings were introduced too late I didn't really have any connection to those parts. I wonder why she didn't introduce their perspective a bit earlier. I admired the raw emotion especially in the chapters of her father. His perspective was my favorite.

Elsa Carrion (ecarrion) | 710 comments It was a great story. It really hit home with me. We had two siblings born here and three of us in Mexico. I remember the feeling of being afraid and hiding from immigration and being afraid of the police. LOL look at me now! I'm a deputy! I remember the feeling of belonging to two countries and the sorrow of not being able to have experienced life there.

I agree, I would have like to have seen the siblings perspective through the book not towards the end.
