Michaela | 187 comments Inhabitants of the city I live in get one book for free each year, and it was this one a few years ago, though in German translation. Never read it before.

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 22 comments I'm excited to read this and to read others of Morrison's works along with the group this year! Just the nudge I need, and I was able to get the audio of Morrison reading this one from our library. Win-win!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) The book is amazing and wonderful, but the story is very sad.

I'm about halfway through and feeling the same - very sad. I love listening to Morrison read her own novels in audio!

And just saw that today is the 90th anniversary of her birth.

Michaela | 187 comments Finished it today, and also found it very depressing. I don´t think there is ANYTHING good in it. It´s well written, but I was glad I was over with it. Hope her other novels aren´t the same.

Unfortunately, this is the view of many white people who refuse to see themselves regarding her novels and black people as well. Enjoy Reading, 📚

Ah, is this a criticism? Obviously white people are easy to bash. The novel isn´t only about white against black, but also about blacks against poorer blacks and violence within the black families. But I won´t mention my opinion anymore. I don´t necessarily give every book by or about blacks 5 stars.

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) | 22 comments This book ripped my heart out, for a variety of reasons! I will say more when I have a few minutes. I mentioned before that it was a joy to listen to Morrison read this, made it all the more poignant. I especially appreciated her author's note in which she explained her intent, which I think she fulfilled wonderfully.

If you read my remark it said "blacks as well". Reading is a powerful tool. Enjoy Reading, 📚

I read your remark, and am not sure what you´re meaning. I found it offending, and speaking to other people about it, they also found it rude. I´m thinking of leaving this group.

Ashley Jacobson | 3 comments Michael. You will be sorely disappointed. All her novels are this depressing. That’s how she writes. It’s brilliant and moving, but yes, depressing.
