Hannah | 3291 comments I had high hopes for this book, never having read anything set in South Africa during WW2, but I felt a bit disappointed. The story had a lot of potential, and there were lots of good things about it, but I felt that more editing was needed (500+ pages of tiny print and quite a bit of repetition), and the portrayals of race and tribal relations were too simplistic. The ending tied things up a bit too neatly, and in a way that I thought was unlikely based on how the events throughout had progressed.

LibraryCin | 11677 comments I liked the movie better. I did like the romance added in + I thought the book focused way more than I was interested in in the boxing.

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2594 comments I really liked this book. It was long though.

Shelly | 939 comments One of my all-time top 10! It is one of the few books I kept so I can reread it at some point.

Robin P | 5739 comments I thought it was very good on audio. A lot of the settings are based on the author's life, though it's unlikely he was as much of a hero in real life. It does have a "white savior" aspect, and the ending was much too neat.
