Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction short story about a lone little house in the middle of a California city that survived a nuclear bomb. The message within this small scifi gem is a good one.

Hope you all enjoy!!

Mikiko (mikikoschot) | 52 comments I remember reading this in high school and it's one of the few (short) stories that really stuck. How technology can be helpful but also destructive. And as technology has advanced in leaps and bounds since the 80's, the themes in the story are timeless.
2026 seemed so far away back then. Looking forward to reading it again.

Also if anyone is interested, there is an audio version narrated by Leonard Nimoy on youtube that I found.

Thank you for mentioning this. I listened to it & thought the audio version was done very well.

I also started to read the The Martian Chronicles and so far it's very good.

Georgina (georgiet29) | 250 comments I can see why There will come soft rains is seen as a stand alone short story, its has little link to the rest of the Martian Chronicles, other than to put in context what has happened on Earth, and is one of the few parts not set on Mars. The whole book is great , but this particular part is a fantastic piece of writing. I can't get the image of the shadows on the wall out of my head.

Pat the Book Goblin | 687 comments Glad you enjoyed it!

Susan Budd (susanbudd) | 39 comments I wrote a long review of The Martian Chronicles. My thoughts on “There Will Come Soft Rains” are in the section subtitled Smart Houses, Dumb People.

Shay | -14 comments I think it has a very interesting perspective. I can see why some people support the idea that creating too many smart devices will eventually make humans less smart and more idle.

I really enjoyed the language of the story. I think it is very poetic. Reading it was very close to watching these events happen in front of me.
