Personally, I have heard it is better to read them first before six of crows but you do not have to? Someone correct me please.

It will make more sense if you read the Shadow and Bone trilogy first, you'll have more appreciation for the world and the references (I think), but you don't NEED to read the trilogy before you read Six of Crows.
I personally read Six of Crows before Shadow and Bone, the only thing that's confusing is the magic system, but that can be remedied with a google search or reading the Shadow and Bone trilogy first/after.
