1) It's not hardboiled. At least, I can't see how it is.
2) These chapters are reading more like a collection of short stories to me than a novel. Really weird.
It is super well written and very page-turning, compelling reading. These characters and their situations are amazing! Unlike other material we've read in this group this book feels like it transcends time and locale, like it can be read and enjoyed a hundred years from now. I love how the author is showing and not narrating. It's very cinematic.
