Reviewing a bit late to fully remember all the stories but it was a solid collection. The theme that really stuck with me is terrible moments in life, truly dire situations such as a violent man kidnapping a teen girl to be his wife, felons forced into terrible experiments, person on the precipice of hospice and senility, people selling themselves into slavery to be the latest lawn ornament trend, yet someone makes a sacrifice or choice for humanity. They may or may not fully know what they are giving up to save a life but at the key moment, they make that choice to try and end the depravity. There is that glimmer of hope for something better.
The stories are vary in length and complexity and some venture over to a sci-fi feel but they tackle difficult emotions in a thoughtful approach. I would be interested to read more from Saunders.
