The Procrastinators Book Club discussion

Welcome to the A Song Below Water Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on July 13th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

July 13: Chapters 1-5

Just finished the first 5 chapters :))
(view spoiler)[So far, I think we dove right into the story and the action, but I can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed about all the info and backstory frequently mentioned but not yet thoroughly explained.

At least the two girls, and especially Effie, as well as their sisterly relationship are adorable! *-* (hide spoiler)]

I haven't quite finished chapter 10 but I'm really enjoying the book! (view spoiler)[ I agree that it's a bit overwhelming how much information is thrown at us. It doesn't help that I don't know much, if anything, about most of the mythical creatures mentioned.

I love the background of Effie's participation in the ren faire, which I think has a lot of fake mythical creatures in it and then being in the real world with so many mythical creatures.

Okay I know that Effie is pretty convinced that she's part mermaid or maybe sprite, but she's really giving me medusa vibes. As far as I know medusa is a one time thing of a mythical creature so idk if that's even possible in this world but the shedding skin and the way it almost sounds like maybe she turned her friends to stone... Finished today! (view spoiler)[ OK BUT I FUCKING CALLED IT!!! I forgot that gorgons were a thing so I had most of the puzzle pieces...

I however did not see that Wallace was gonna be the gargoyle. Not by a mile. But I really liked that.

I was so happy that Tavia is able to use her awaken to bring back people who were turned to stone. I guess it kinda makes sense why Effie's dad doesn't like sirens now. (hide spoiler)]

Heyyy, I finished the book and finally got around to gathering my thoughts about it.

(view spoiler)[Hahah, I also thought about Medusa due to the snake-like hair and turning people to stone, but I hadn't thought about gorgons (because the Greek word for mermaids is actually gorgons, so I didn't even know they are supposed to be different things xD).

Wallace's character was too weird, but it made sense when it was revealed that he was the gargoyle.

Ahahaha, I hadn't thought about the implication of Effie's dad not liking that sirens can awaken whomever he has... stoned, haha!

I also liked that Tavia finally embraced who she is, although I hope their world starts to treat mythical creatures equally (such a weird thing to say xD) (hide spoiler)]
