Sara | 2 comments Hello Hive!

I know of a few "bad" or "not nice" Jane variations but am craving reading one and wanted to seek group knowledge. Please let me know your favorites (or not as favorite) variations like this.

Thanks!

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 466 comments Here is a list that I am still working on. It is not complete and I add to it as I find them. Some, I notice, have already been mentioned.

The not so nice Jane trope [NSNJ] has been picking up in popularity within the JAFF genre. It was not long ago that no one would DARE alter our dear sweet Jane. However, the gloves are now off and our girl is allowed full rein in being as evil or nefarious as she wishes. Go for it b-witch... do your worst.

Debbie (dmbrown) | 78 comments I know Rose mentioned Mr. Darcy - A Man of Honour here. I've owned it for a while and finally got around to reading it.

I found it entertaining but frustrating. It's like the author made Jane evil just for the sake of making her evil. I mean, yes, Mrs. Bennet spoils her the same way she spoils Lydia, and Jane's selfish personality starts there - but I don't understand where the depth of her immorality and, specifically, her hatred for Elizabeth comes from.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 466 comments Sam, I felt the same way. But then, I began to enjoy the switch. I love a not-so-nice Jane [NSNJ] story. It's almost like, how bad can they make her?

Perhaps, Debbie, Jane is jealous of Elizabeth being her father's favorite. Jane has to share being her mother's favorite with Lydia who is the baby. Elizabeth has the limelight with her father's attention. Most girls want to be Daddy's favorite and Jane does not have that. She will always fall short in her father's eyes.

Elizabeth has his wit [which Jane probably doesn't understand]. Lizzy has his intelligence and Jane certainly is no bluestocking. Lizzy is the only daughter that has access to the bookroom. So, perhaps we have that little green monster at play. Then again I could be completely wrong.

I'll have to read this and see if my conjecture is correct.
