Seventeen-year-old Nita does not live a normal life. Her mother hunts and kills supernatural creatures, and it is Nita's job to dissect them and package the body parts for sale. Her father handles the marketing. Nita loves her job and is not bothered by dealing with dead bodies, but one day her mother brings home a live boy, expecting Nita to dissect him live - and Nita decides she just cannot do it. But it is a decision that brings about drastic consequences in her life.
This was a fascinating and brilliant book - such unique ideas, and well executed. I'm not usually into horror, but this is a blend of fantasy/horror that is targeted to a YA audience of the sturdier kind, and wasn't overly gory or gratuitous with the violence. Oh, there's plenty of it, but it's there as a part of Nita's world and serves the story rather than existing for its own sake. I enjoyed this book a lot, and look forward to the rest of the trilogy.
