Booknblues | 12055 comments Ruth Ozeki, an author who lives on Cortes Island of Canada on the Desolation Sound crafts a story of a Japanese school girl named Nao, pronounced now and an author named Ruth who lives with her husband, Oliver on Cortes Island.

Ruth and Nao are connected by Nao's diary which Ruth found along the shoreline, shortly after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Now, there are all kinds of twists and turns and timeshifts and quantum physics in this book. I myself got caught up in it reading it on 9/11/2021:

As they made their way across the country, American flags began popping up like flowers after a rain, fluttering from poles and car antennae, and taped to the windows of stores and homes. The country was awash in red, white, and blue. At night, in Super 8s and Motel 6s, they watched the president vow to hunt down the terrorists. “Dead or alive,” he promised. “Smoke ’em out of their caves. Git ’em running so we can git ’em.”

How am I reading this on this day? How can this be happening Nao?

What I loved most about this book, is the memoir part of the book about life on Cortes Island it was really entrancing.

Jen K | 3143 comments Great review! Had to check it out once I finally wrote mine. Despite some really tough chapters, I quite enjoyed this book. It discussed so many difficult topics but was so well done. I appreciated that it all came together in the end.

Also I so want to visit that island in BC now! and eat fresh oysters.

Seriously, I absolutely loved the part about Cortes Island. The story about them getting the oysters and clams made me hungry because I like them both but especially oysters.

It is a complex story that deals with so much. I liked parts of it much more than others.

Booknblues | 12055 comments I've had it on my tbr for a while. A friend from Shelfari, loved this book and that is why I wanted to read it.

I didn't love it as much as her.

Jgrace | 3935 comments I loved it. I like the quirky twists and turns of metafiction. I think I'd like to reread it. Shouldn't have given my copy to my daughter.
