Relic is our October group read! Let's celebrate the spooky month of October together by discussing a Monster story.

Phillip Murrell | 100 comments Heads up, the Kindle link goes to the French edition. The good news is the English edition is five dollars cheaper.

Phillip Murrell | 100 comments I finished the book. My scattered-brained review has some points that stuck out for me.

It was a bit longer than I thought it should be. I crave action in my stories, but a few red shirt deaths in the beginning didn't keep me nourished. The final act brought the danger, but I lost some enjoyment when the groups were broken down between likeable and jerk characters. Was anyone really surprised with what happened to Wright, Rickman, and Cuthbert?

Surprisingly, the best part for me was the epilogue. Normally I sniff out a twist. This time, it wasn't even on my radar. I doubt I'll read the full series, but book 2 could be enjoyable.

L.G. (upl8) | 73 comments I've read every Pendergast book in order except for Relic, Reliquary and Bloodless (purchased/TBR). About 20 years ago I had watched the Relic movie and it was not my favorite. I forgot the reality of movie adaptations and skipped the first two books prior to starting the series.

While reading this book, I enjoyed the introduction to several of the Pendergast series' recurring characters. I'm also a huge fan of the natural history museum in NYC. I spent many holidays wandering through the exhibits.

This was a great October (Halloween season) read! For subscribers to Kindle Unlimited, Relic is available at no extra cost.

Phillip Murrell | 100 comments I hadn't realized there was a movie until someone commented on my review. I'm curious to check it out, but I've lowered my expectations to the basement. Has anyone seen it?

I watched the movie when it was first released (about 20 years ago). The movie adaptation doesn't follow the book too closely. I hadn't read any of the Pendergast books at that time. The movie is okay as a "monster/creature" movie, but Pendergast character isn't really a factor.

I just finished Reliquary, having read both Relic and Reliquary back to back. Reliquary begins 18 months after Relic and continues the story to an actual conclusion. The plot twist in Relic is expanded.
