Duncan Wilson has been writing since childhood, having fallen in love with the written word at a very early age. Having spent his formative years in various libraries, he can bore his friends on a variety of subjects. Inspired by the natural world and the splendors of the heavens, he writes primarily science fiction and paranormal stories. Other than writing, he enjoys cooking, playing games with friends, and listening to music.

Once upon a lane

"There once was a lane, filled with well-tended lawns and well-fostered friendships, of well-appointed houses all neat and tidy and those that live within, of stories and mysteries that manifest for only fleeting moments for the few who pay attention. This is one such tale. A tale about pleasant people, about the lives they live, about their wants and dreams, about their loves and losses, their joys and hates, about their days and nights in the company of cherished companions in the houses they call home. In this tale of the happy little lives of blissful simple folk, there are monsters, to be sure. But this is not the story of monsters, this is not the tale of their evil deeds, this is the tale of those they make suffer. In this tale, the monsters have no names. The monsters do not deserve names."

A character driven slice-of-life story that follows the humble lives of the residents of a suburban neighborhood as they live and love, and about the house with the dead yard, a vacant lot, that sits among their homes, inert and immobile, yet intimidating and terrifying to any who look at it too long. The children of the lane are not the only ones who are fearful of the anomaly in their midst. Every adult upon the lane wonders why the structure still stands, with no known owner and no reason to be. The lingering question is not who owns the house, but why no one ever goes in or comes out, and why there are such ghastly noises emanating from within. Day by day, the happy people of the lane go about their tasks and trials, and day by day, the house with the dead yard seems a little more ominous, a little more intrusive, and a little less ignorable than before.

Duncan Wilson (duncan_wilson) The Essence of Life
The Essence of Life - coverart by Jose Castañeda
“They were not human anymore. Not dead, but not human.”

Decades ago an explosion in the small farming community of Tunstin, Montana triggered a cataclysm that changed the residents forever. Although they were walking and talking like normal people, observers couldn't help but notice that something was wrong with them. Before the explosions they were like any small town. After it was like whatever made them people had been stripped away. A battery of physical test from outsiders responding to the blast reveled nothing unusual about the townsfolk, however, anyone who talked to them could tell that something was wrong. Eventually, the researchers gave up on trying to help the people of Tunstin and leave them to die out on their own.

Now an ambitious student has stumbled across one of the responders' journal and finds herself caught up in the mystery. What happened in Tunstin that took away the townsfolk's lives as surely as if they'd died? Determined to get to the heart of the mystery, Candice Jane Hoyle is on a mission to find out what droves of scientists missed. Her research has turned up three leads and started a race against time to learn the facts before the only people who can answer her questions disappear entirely. Each surviving witness she talks to brings her closer to finding out the truth of what happens, but can she figure out the mystery before it consumes her?

Duncan Wilson (duncan_wilson) The Nature of Crows
The Nature of Crows
At the age of sixty five Joe is bored with his life. To the casual eye, Joe has led a rather successful life. He’s held down a steady job for most of it, had a good marriage that produced three well-adjusted off spring and generally led a life most men would envy. With his children out of the house raising their own kids and his wife in the grave, Joe no longer finds anything compelling about his life and has decided to take the matter into his own hands. He’s going to end things on his terms instead of growing older and more bored with his life.
He’s ready to take the last train out of this world but while lying on the train track he hears the sounds of a young lady in distress. He abandons the tracks and his final journey for a little bit longer to help her out and in the process changes the course of his life and death. As he approaches the screaming girl he witnesses a strange sight. Dancing around her is a figure in black, corralling her up against a wall. When he reaches out to touch the stranger it collapses, leaving behind a pile of clothes and rats. .
Unable to come to terms with what he’s seen, the next day Joe sets off to find out what really happened the night before. Where the stranger was on the tracks he finds an employee ID badge belonging to someone from LD Enterprises. Finally fully engaged in his life and convinced that if he could just track down the person the badge belonged to he could make sense of what happened the night before, Joe sets off to find the mystery person. When he starts searching for the company itself, however, all he finds are more questions.
